Psys Gangnam Style Breaks YouTube with Record Views Written by Adri On December 4, 2014 The popularity of Psys Gangnam Style MV on YouTube just wont die down. On December 1st, YouTube shared that Gangnam Style had surpassed its 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views) limit and forced them to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (=9,223,372,036,854,775,808 views). If youre not sure how to say that magic number, that is 9 quintillion were talking about.
YouTube also marked the occasion with a special counter on the “Gangnam Style” video page. A cursor hovering over the counter spins through the view count. In their Google+ page, YouTube ask viewers to:
"YouTube engineers anticipated the problem and upgraded to a 64-bit integer. That means that "Gangnam Style" or future mega-hit videos can now go beyond nine sextillion (9,223,372,036,854,775,808) views a feat that, at least according to conventional wisdom, would be impossible to break."
The MV broke records by being the first to hit 1 billion views, but then it went right on to reaching 2 billion views. Regardless, its popularity is not winding down anytime soon as a recent post by YouTube reveals that the MV is still going strong and jokes that the site needs an upgrade to accommodate.
YouTube wrote, "We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. "Gangnam Style" has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade!
