The life is leaving "The King"s Face" despite the intrigue of war and the heroics of Gwanghae. Guest actors who portray the Ming and the Japanese present caricatures of real people. They are merely evil to be evil rather than believing in their cause, or even in their actions. King Seonjo is merely a jealous man who throws tantrums because we cannot see the insecure though processes behind his actions. The show occasionally throws the viewers a pittance in the form of a voice over, but it isn"t enough. It is also a waste of Lee Sung-jae who I am quite bored of in this role. It is not only Lee, but all of the main cast. They seem to struggle to be convincing, which reflects more on the production than their acting. The cast as a whole boasts and expansive, high quality body of work that has not seemed to help them in making this drama hit home.

The war itself is clever portrayed using maps and voiceovers so that the gist of what is happening is conveyed without overloading the viewer with information. What would"ve enhanced this is if a few battle scenes were shown and Gwanghae could be seen in his element as a leader. It happened twice this episode, but the timing of the scenes appearances was not strong. Neither was Gwanghae"s involvement. Everyone mentions that he is a brilliant leader, but rarely do we see him conferring, or battling, or mulling over strategies. Just as we never see Do-chi struggle with his demons, his ambition, his choice to leave the Daedong Society and enact his revenge alone. He"s a wasted character who is no longer tragic because of how he is so badly written.

Then there is Ga-hee, the supposed love interest of three men, and who gets very little romantic screen time. Romantic tension is negligible and, like Do-chi"s personal situation, the tragedy of the star-crossed romance between Ga-hee and Gwanghae is lost.

Ambition Hurts Family: Korean Drama 'The King's Face' Episode 5

News via hancinema.net

Her friendship/brotherhood with Do-chi is quite lovely as well. They are siblings, comrades, and friends. He already has feelings for her, but the strong bond goes both ways. It will make the love triangle (or quadrangle, whatever it may be) much more interesting. Do-chi is also evening out as a character. His public actions show his intelligence and bravery while his private time with Ga-hee fills out his character nicely as he shows his thoughtfulness and caring for his people and his cause. This is so much better than the rash, rather one-dimensional man of the earliest episodes.

There is one more bond in this show that is touching: that between the queen and Gwanghae. The queen is childless and disparaged by the consorts for being so. Gwanghae wishes not to hurt his brothers for the throne and hopes to be a family with his warring family. He and the queen find a familial relationship with each other that is quite lovely. They are family by love, not by blood, which is more than what can be said for the prince"s blood family.

"The King"s Face" has a lot going for it that can help, and hurt. As I write about it I find more things than I thought to admire and critique. Let"s hope it remains that way.

What stands out about "The King"s Face" is that it hasn"t yet settled into a groove. The tone shifts ungracefully from mood to mood and is paralleled by jumpy character development. Luckily, this episode was about face reading and how it works. There was a lot of demonstration of face reading that was informative and creatively presented. Should there be much more of it, the face reading will lose its appeal, but in these early stages, such demonstrations are welcome. It is also used to show the similarly brilliant minds of Gwanghae and Do-chi, both romantic and political rivals although they do not yet know it. Part of the appeal of the rivalry is the grounded chemistry between Seo In-guk and Sin Seong-rok. They will be a fun pair to watch on screen.

The biggest criticism I have is on the directorial style. Everything is portrayed in an overly exaggerated manner that gives the drama a slapstick feel that misses the mark of actually being amusing. Tears shed by Gwanghae seem overwrought as they happen several times with accompanying screams of sorrow. Lady Kim glares jealously at the king"s newest, young concubine and dramatically declares her unacceptable. It"s all just too much. The show is forcing emotion upon the viewer rather than letting him or her react naturally.

Sin Seong-rok as Do-chi is an interesting character, however. He is a leader who is extremely insecure. He hides dark secrets in order to pursue his noble cause. He is both talented and determined, but that insecurity is what gives him color and appeal I"m hoping the production team takes advantage of that insecurity because that will make him good second (or third) lead material.
