"Did you want to do season 3 of this show?" Kim Joo Hyuk asked Cha Tae Hyun, who is one of two holdovers from season 2 along with Kim Jong Min. "No, I didn"t want to do it," he replied.

"It was difficult to walk a different path from the other season 2 members, who all suffered together," he said. "I had a lot of doubts."

Defconn eased his worries. "It"s because there is Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Jong Kim that season 3 is as good as it is right now," he said.

This is however where Season 2 fell very flat. Choi Jae Hyung PD was famously known for shows such as FC Shoot Dori (I wonder who remembers that lovely show) and Invincible Baseball Team. Both shows are a bunch of sporting rookies working together and having a good time irrespective of their skills. On the surface, that kind of approach seems to be a natural extension to the foundation that Nah Young Suk PD laid down but there is a key difference that ends up undermining the whole concept. In both of these sports based shows, the ultimate goal was to improve their skills and get a series of winning results. This kind of mindset carried over to how Choi Jae Hyung PD ran 1 Night 2 Days, and it showed. There was a bigger emphasis on bigger and bigger set pieces and games as a device to move each episode forward with the goal being a better meal and a better sleeping environment. It became less about the people and more about the games. There was also a lot more games that pitted the members against each other rather than working as one whole team. Ultimately, the cast was merely a pawn used to protect the queen, the trademark Luck of the Draw Games.

And yet they seemed to have so much potential in the beginning.

It was frankly the wrong approach for the show but it was just one of many niggling issues Ive had with the show. The cast of Season 2 also eventually end up being rather tame. By the end of Season 2, we had seen the likes of Lee Soo Geun, Uhm Tae Woong, and Kim Jong Min for the better part of 4~5 years. Long lived casts arent an issue in itself as long as they constantly evolved their characters but Uhm Tae Woong never really changed much from his original Looks okay but isnt really great at anything character. Likewise with Lee Soo Geun, who worked great as a supporting character for Kang Ho Dong but by himself he lacked an avenue to bounce off jokes with and tried to cover up this failing with more and more exaggerated actions, usually to mixed results. The new cast members such as Cha Tae Hyun, Joo Won, Kim Seung Woo, Yoo Hae Jin, and Joo Won were interesting but they never seem to interact on a more natural level like the Season 1 members did. They seemed more like good colleagues than good friends.

The reason for the bump in ratings for “Happy Sunday” can be attributed to the airing of the first episode of “1 Night 2 Days” season 3. New cast members Kim Joo Hyuk, Jung Joon Young, Defconn and Kim Joon Ho have joined season 2 members Kim Jong Min and Cha Tae Hyun for this new season. Although the second season was wrapped up with low ratings, season 3 showed promise as it got off to a strong start with renewed viewer interest in the cast.

Often straggling in last place for viewership ratings in competition with MBC’s “Sunday Sunday Night” and SBS’s “Good Sunday,” thanks to the launching of season 3 of “1 Night 2 Days,” KBS 2TV’s “Happy Sunday” was able to nab second place with “Sunday Sunday Night” in first with 14.4% viewership ratings and “Good Sunday” with 10.7%.

“There are substantial rumors that Kim Hyun Joong is one of the top candidates to join the sequel to ‘1N2D.’ Some even say the show’s already in talks with Kim Hyun Joong for a possible role. But it’s such a sensitive and breaking news that everyone’s trying to be careful with what they say,” an industry source told local media.

The source continued, “We don’t think there’s anything confirmed yet. We’re guessing the production team only asked if he (Kim Hyun Joong) would be interested in the show.”

In response, Kim Hyun Joong’s agency said, “There was an offer to appear as a regular host on ‘1N2D,’ but we haven’t held any substantial talks yet.”

1 Night 2 Days: Season 2 and the Pitfalls of Variety Show Sequels Admittedly, compared to its fellow contemporary and longtime rival Running Man, the renowned variety show 1 Night 2 Days doesnt get as much love from international fans. While the show still has a sizable overseas fanbase, its popularity mostly circulates domestically in Korea rather than internationally. While this somewhat unfortunate fact is a little blatant, the shows popularity in Korea really is still a force to be reckoned with. Once upon a time during its prime, the shows ratings were floating comfortably around the forty percent range, a truly remarkable feat for a variety show. 1N2D consistently dominated its timeslot, easily beating the more internationally-popular Running Man with a pretty significant margin.

Another laudable aspect of the show is its longevity. The program first aired on August 5, 2007, with its first season ending on February 26, 2012 after a five year run. The shows second season started on March 4, 2012 and is currently still ongoing, making the series total run extend for six years now. The show has been through a tone of line-up revisions over the years its been airing, but it has consistently appealed to audiences. Considering how fickle viewers can get, that itself is a feat; and this evidences the irresistible, long-lasting charm (and formula) that 1N2D has perfected through the years. All in all, 1N2D is an extraordinary variety program, in a class of its own; theres no doubt that it has cemented its place in variety show history.

This entertainment staple has left much to be desired from other variety shows but the once-upon-a-time ratings monster hasnt been performing as well in recent times. 1N2Ds ratings have dropped to the mid-to-low tens, remaining shy of the twenty-percent mark. To be honest, these ratings arent necessarily bad per se, but they pale in comparison to the high thirties and low forties the show used to be hitting. And sadly, the shows ratings have been on a slow yet consistent decline, something quite worrying for the once unbeatable program.

The original ’1 Night 2 Days’ was a juggernaut, reaching ratings of around 30%. Despite the fact that the new season is not reaching those numbers, it still has a modicum of success as the new members have fallen into their roles and characters have been established. Recent episodes have recorded viewer ratings in the high-tens, promising a bright future.

Meanwhile, during this anniversary episode, the cast members teamed up according to the answers they had written in the time capsule and then went through a variety of games all related to ducks – including racing on duck-shaped paddle boats and holding a duck-waddle race.
