Over 100,000 petitioners ask White House to adopt East Sea

NEW YORK - More than 100,000 people have signed on an online petition asking the White House for its support to have the East Sea rather than the Sea of Japan adopted as the name of the body of water separating Korea from Japan. The petition drive started two months ago.

Now, the ball is in the White House's court. "We expect to hear something by the end of this month", said Peter Kim, a member of the Korean-American Association of Virginia (KAAV) who started the petition on Mar. 22.

Petitions sent to the White House must reach a threshold of 25,000 signatures within 30 days in order to generate an official response.

The East Sea petition garnered 25,000 in just two weeks. It has 100,362 as of Wednesday.

"We would've already gotten a response if it weren't for such a sensitive and controversial issue", said Kim. "It's not going to be an easy call for the U.S.

government". The petition demands publishers of U.S. public school textbooks to refer to the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan not only as the Sea of Japan, but also as the East Sea.

"The White House not only has to address our position, but the Japanese side as well, which adds to the complexity", says Kim.

About a month after the East Sea petition kicked off, a group of Japanese also submitted a White House petition titled, "Sea of Japan - the authentic history in our textbook! We are teaching our children the authentic history, so why change?" It also picked up 25,000 signatures within 30 days, so an official White House response is expected.

Koreans backing the petition are hoping for a public hearing inviting both Koreans and Japanese for an opportunity to duke it out.

"It's going to be the first time in history for Koreans to confront the Japanese about this matter", said Hong Il-song, the head of KAAV and active advocate of the issue. "And we're ready to rebut each and every argument our counterparts make". Hong, who recently launched an international committee promoting the name East Sea, doesn't expect the spat to end anytime soon.

"It's not going to be a short and easy journey, but we're going to push forward and focus primarily on U.S. textbooks", he said.

"If American textbooks adopt the term East Sea, the government will eventually follow as well", he said, stressing that the U.S. government's support is essential to convincing the members of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).

The IHO, which gathered last month, failed to reach an agreement and postponed until 2017 to decide whether the Korean name "East Sea" should be concurrently used with the "Sea of Japan". Over the past several months, Korean associations big and small across the U.S. have huddled up behind this issue.

"People say you become patriot when you go abroad. That's exactly right", says Hong, who added that being far away from home allows overseas Koreans to see the forest, not just the trees.

"This issue shouldn't be taken lightly. It's extremely important to our future generations", he said.

'East Sea' Spat Moves to White House Website

Koreans and Japanese are clashing on the White House website over the name of the body of water separating the two countries. After the Korean community in the U.S. filed an online petition with the White House demanding the publishers of public school textbooks there refer to it not only as the "Sea of Japan" but also the "East Sea", Japanese Internet users began to fight back, claiming that "Sea of Japan" is the historical name.

As of Tuesday morning, 27,700 people had signed the petition submitted by the Korean community in Virginia. It urged 1,300 leaders of local Korean communities in America to take part in the petition. If more than 25,000 people sign the petition within 30 days, the White House reviews it and states its position or holds a hearing to determine the validity of the claim and hands the matter over to the relevant agency.

This prompted a Japanese resident in the state of Mississippi to post his own petition drive on the website saying "Sea of Japan" is the common name for the body of water and accusing Korea of seeking to rewrite history "blinded by its radical nationalism". So far, around 2,000 people have signed.

Last year, the U.S. said it will stick to the name "Sea of Japan" in accordance with its policy of using only one name for any body of water.

White House gets East Sea petition signed by 25,000

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The White House is expected to take a stance on the controversy over the name of the sea between Korea and Japan after tens of thousands of people signed an online petition.

The White House's official Web site promises an official response to any petition on it that receives more than 25,000 signatures within 30 days.

As of Wednesday, more than 25,000 people signed a petition urging the U.S. government to stop using the name Japan Sea and use East Sea.

The petition started on March 22.

"We have more than 25,000 people who signed the petition after less than 15 days", said Hong Il-song, head of a Korean-American association in Virginia that posted the petition, "but we will continuously encourage people to sign", he said.

Vietnamese-Americans recently collected 150,000 signatures on a petition regarding a human rights issue and the White House responded, Hong said.

The Korean petition claimed the East Sea was the original name of the body of water but Japan changed it to the Sea of Japan in 1928. Korea was colonized by Japan between 1910 and 1945.

"We are still teaching our children a FALSE history that was manipulated by the invader who attacked Pearl Harbor", the petition read. "Our children have a right to learn a TRUE history!"

The Sea of Japan has been used since the International Hydrographic Organization, the worldwide authority on oceanic names, determined it as the sea's name in its first edition of "Limits of Oceans and Seas" in 1929.

Historical documents show that Koreans called the waters the East Sea for around 2,000 years. The Korean national anthem has the name East Sea is in its lyrics.

The U.S. government reaffirmed its position in supporting the use of the Sea of Japan last August. The IHO is to hold a general meeting in Monaco on April 23-27 to discuss controversial oceanic names, including the East Sea.

The Korean government wants the use of both names simultaneously. Korean groups in the U.S. have also been getting signatures on a petition recommending the use of both names, separate from the White House petition.

Daryl Hannah, Rfk Jr. Arrested At White House During Keystone Oil Pipeline Protest: Activists Tie Themselves To White House Gate [VIDEO]

Daryl Hannah, Rfk Jr. Arrested At White House During Keystone Oil Pipeline Protest: Activists Tie Themselves To White House Gate [VIDEO] Daryl Hannah and Rfk Jr. were arrested at a White House protest on Thursday.Daryl Hannah and Rfk Jr. were arrested in Washington D.C. along with 45 other activists on Wednesday, when the protestors tied themselves to the White House gate in an attempt to prevent the Keystone XL pipeline.

Activist Bill McKibben, civil rights leader Julian Bond and Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune were also among those arrested for protesting the proposed $7 billion pipeline, which would carry oil derived from western Canada to refineries in the Texas Gulf Coast, according to The Daily News.

Daryl Hannah, who starred in the films "Kill Bill" and "Splash" was also arrested in Texas back in October for protesting the pipeline.

"It's incumbent upon us, upon citizens, to show up and stand up and take action," Hannah told Democracy Now. "The polls show that the majority of people in this country are very, very concerned about the climate crisis and want action. And so, the only way that's going to happen is if we insist upon it. President Obama again and again says, 'Push me.' Well, we need to get out there and push him."

President Obama, who called on congress to address the issue of climate change in his State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, has twice rejected the Keystone XL pipeline because of the sensitive land it was originally planned to pass through in Nebraska.

It is unclear how President Obama will proceed now that the governor of Nebraska, Dave Heineman, has approved a new route.

Since the pipeline crosses international borders into Canada, it falls under the State Department's jurisdiction. However, experts expect the president to make the final decision.

In the meantime hopefully Hannah can stay out of jail. At least this time she was arrested with Rfk Jr. , who is a lawyer.

The son of former U.S. Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy, Rfk Jr. specializes in environmental law.
