Gangnam 1970 And 'Fatal' Will Screen During The Korean Movie Night Emerging Talent Series

(Photo : ) Gangnam 1970, also known as Gangnam Blues will premier for audiences in New York City on May 7 as part of the Emerging Talent series in the on-going Korean Movie Night program. Gangnam 1970 was a commercial success and marked the film debut of Lee Min Ho. The film centers on corruption which emerges from the development of Gangnam during the 1970s.

Korean Movie Night New York is co-presented by the Korean Cultural Service of New York and Asia Society. The Emerging Talent series will feature 5 films which highlighted some of Koreas most talented actors and directors.

The series kicks off on Tuesday, April 14 with the North American premiere of The King of Jokgu. The King of Jokgu is a rip roaring comedy which stars Ahn Jae Hong, Hwang Seung Un and Jung Woo Sik. Ahn Jae Hong portrays Hong Man Sub, a 24-year-old college student who is not successful with women. He haplessly falls in love with the most popular girl at his college and hijinx ensue.

The next film in the series is the 2013 film 10 Minutes, which will make its East Coast premier on April 28. Baek Jong Hwan stars as Ho Chan, a college who dreams of becoming a television producer. 10 Minutes marked the directorial debut for Lee Yong Seung. The movie provides an analytical perspective on Korean corporate culture.

Gangnam 1970 will screen on May 7 and will be followed by the 2012 film Fatal on May 13. Fatal focuses on the fragile relationship between Jang Mi, a young rape victim and Sung Gong, one of the assailants. A chance encounter reunites them. Sung Gong is distraught when he realizes that Jang Mi is still dealing with trauma from the incident. He attempts to redeem himself by befriending her. Fatal stars Nam Yeon Woo, Yang Jo A, Hong Jeong Ho and Kang Ki Doong. The film was created with a budget of $3,000 USD and marked the directorial debut of Lee Don Ku.

The Emerging Talent series will conclude on May 27 with Park Jung Bums Alive. Alive is a 2014 film which was the follow up to the neorealist drama The Journals of Musan. The film stars Lee Seung Yeon, Park Jung Bum and Park Myeong Hoon.

Lee Min Ho’s “Gangnam 1970″ to Screen in Select Theaters in the United States and Canada

Lee Min Ho and Kim Rae Won's much anticipated action noir film "Gangnam 1970" (Gangnam Blues) will be premier at select cinemas across the US and Canada.

On January 13th, the film’s distributor Showbox Mediaplex announced that “‘Gangnam 1970′ will be opening in select theaters in the United States and Canada on February 6.”

Previously, they announced that “Gangnam 1970″ will be opening in theaters in various Asian countries throughout January and February. After the film’s premiere in Korea on January 21, the movie will open in Singapore, Vietnam, and Myanmar on January 29, while in Taiwan, it will open on January 30. It is also scheduled to premiere in Malaysia and Indonesia in mid-February. In Thailand and Hong Kong, the film will open in theaters on February 5.

Distributed by DreamWest Pictures that distributed “Tazza 2,” The Face Reader,” and “Friends 2,” in North America, “Gangnam 1970″ will see select screenings in major North American cities like Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, and Vancouver.

“Gangnam 1970″ stars Lee Min Ho and Kim Rae Won in leading roles, and tells the story of the Gangnam real estate craze of the 1970′s.

K-popstar Psy's smash hit "Gangname Style" has become a million-selling single in the UK, the first time a Korean artist has ever reached this sales milestone, according to the Official Charts Company.

"This is an amazing achievement by PSY. It is further confirmation of 'Gangnam Style' as a true phenomenon," said Martin Talbot of the Official Charts. "It is the first UK million-seller by an Asian music star, and a sign that K-pop has truly arrived in the UK!"

Back in December, the video for "Gangnam Style" became the first YouTube clip to reach one billion views in the website's history, according to Billboard.com.

Psy is the 129th British artist in the last 60 years to hit the million-seller list.

"Gangnam Style" was a single off Psy's his sixth album, "PSY Six (Six Rules), Part 1."

TMZ reports that PSY will release his new single on April 13.

North Korean Citizens Secretly Watch PSY’s “Gangnam Style”

A short video and screen-captures of some North Korean citizens secretly watching PSY’s hit song “Gangnam Style” were recently shared online, drawing a lot of attention.

On February 13, an online community forum posted several screen captures of a video inside a house of North Korean citizens where the is played on the television screen.

The screen-captures showed two people huddling underneath a blanket to watch PSY‘s music video for “Gangnam Style” in a dark room with framed pictures of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Eun on a wall.

Upon seeing the screen-captures and video, netizens left many comments such as, “It looks like ‘Gangnam Style’ is popular in North Korea. You have to reach at least this many people to be a real world star,” “To think that they’re enjoying ‘Gangnam Style’ in the middle of experimenting nuclear tests, I feel a bit choked up,” “They must be high up like Kim Jung Eun to have access to this kind of content.” and more.
