[Live Blog] 2013 KBS & SBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

[Live Blog] 2013 KBS & SBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A BangThe live blog team is currently running on dangerous amounts of caffeine, and Im pretty sure I just saw a purple elephant fly by the window but the show must go on. So far weve covered the all three Entertainment Awards from KBS, SBS, and MBC, the SBS Gayo Daejun, and the MBC Drama Awards. Now, we will be ending the year with a bang by proving live blog coverage of the 2013 SBS Drama Awards AND the 2013 KBS Drama Awards,  which are airing later today at the same time.

First, Im going to shake my fists at these broadcasters for not separating their awards out. After thats done, were happy to announce that we will be covering both awards at the same time here at Soompi. This is going to be an interesting way of finishing the year, thats for sure.

I, Lordbordem will be covering the 2013 KBS Drama Awards while our team of sleepless editors (halves in unison and crystalcove) will guide you through the 2013 SBS Drama Awards. Stayed tuned for updates announcing the start of the live coverage of the SBS and KBS Drama Awards, starting in about 4 hours!

But first, familiarize yourself with the candidates and the K-Drama  landscape in SBS and KBS with our review below.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

2013 SBS Drama Awards Looking back at 2013, its kind of scary to see how many great dramas SBS had produced over the span of 12 months. Its a list that comprises dramas such as Queen Of Ambition, Incarnation of Money, Jang Ok Jeong, The Heirs, That Winter, the Wind blows, I Can Hear Your Voice, The Masters Sun and a whole bunch of other long running dramas.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

In 2012, actor Son Hyun Joo won the Grand Award for his fantastic performance on the drama The Chaser. While he faced some stiff competition, it was still relatively safe to presume that the veteran actor would walk away with that award. This year, however, is almost impossible to call. Lee Bo Young or Lee Jong Suk have a great chance to win the Grand Award with the amazing success of I Can Hear Your Voice.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

The same however could also be said for Gong Hyo Jin/So Ji Sub from The Masters Sun along with Jo In Sung/Song Hye Gyo from That Winter, the Wind blows.  If there is one issue with having so many great dramas over the years, it is that it becomes almost impossible to predict how the awards going to get distributed.

Its going to be really interesting to see how this award pans out.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

2013 KBS Drama Awards The KBS drama department tend to operate rather differently compared to the two other main terrestrial broadcasters.  While SBS and MBC tend to focus on the 18~25 episode mini series style of dramas, KBS has always been the king of the long running drama series, the type of dramas that will probably see around 50 episodes from start to finish. While these dramas dont tend to be extremely popular in the international scene, these long runners, rating wise, tend to eclipse every other show on TV. These are the dramas that still pull in 30%~40% ratings on a weekly basis and have absolutely no peers in the extremely lucrative 40~50s viewer age group.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

This, however, doesnt mean that KBS doesnt have few shorter hits as well. In previous years weve seen shorter dramas such as The Slave Hunters, Brain and Iris propelled their respective leads to the grand award. This year though, KBSs line up of mini series seems rather lackluster save for one particular mention. The list is populated by dramas such as Ad Genius Lee Taek Baek, Marry Him If You Dare, Beautiful Man, Queen Of The Office, Prime Minister and I, Iris 2, Shark and the Petal and the Blade.  Unfortunately, most of these performed rather poorly and dont really seem to have a great chance of taking any major awards.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

However, there are two shorter dramas that has a good chance of beating extended drama favorites such as Youre the Best Lee Soon Shin and Kings Family. Both Secret and Good Doctor present themselves extremely strongly, having performed brilliantly in both ratings and in the eyes of critics.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

They were two of the most popular dramas in the 2nd half of 2013, and it does appear likely that leads from both dramas such as Joo Won, Moon Chae Won, Hwang Jung Eun and Ji Sung will have a great chance of sweeping up a lot of awards amongst each other.

[Live Blog] 2013 KBSSBS Drama Awards - Ending The Year With A Bang

There are also daily dramas such as Sincerity Moves Heaven that could also have a chance of gathering up a few awards thanks to strong ratings over the year, but doesnt seem likely to take any of the top awards given that it runs on KBSs secondary channel, KBS 1.

We will be ending the year with a bang, the live blog for 2013 KBS Drama Awards and the 2013 SBS Drama Awards will kick off  on December 31 starting at 8:00PM and 8:30PM KST, respectively. [Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled Jungle

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled Jungle

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled JunglePreviously on Day Two of the live blog jam, we brought you the 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards and the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun. Now its time to jump over to SBS to see who will come out on top on the 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards. Get ready for another three hours of live streaming, award speeches, zany performances, and usual trademark cynical written commentary. Will Yoo Jae Suk be able to win the Grand Award for the third year running or will he be beaten by the star of the jungle, Kim Byung Man? Perhaps Kang Ho Dong will make his triumphant return? Only one way to find out.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled Jungle

2013 SBS Entertainment Awards The SBS Entertainment Awards is probably the hardest one to predict. In previous years, it would have probably been safe to say that SBSs flagship Sunday program, Running Man, would have safely taken up most of the awards, but it has faced much stiffer competition in the last two years. Running Mans charismatic MC, Yoo Jae Suk, has won the SBS Grand Award for two years running and in total has won it four times over the course of five years. The biggest question on everyones lips will be if Yoo Jae Suk manages to make it three years running or if his award-winning streak will come to an unfortunate halt.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled Jungle

In that case, who else has a good chance of winning the Grand Award? Well, the featured image for this image will give you a clue as to who I believe has a good chance to win the Grand Award this year. Lets start with Kim Byung Man. In 2012, Kim Byung Man won the high excellence for variety shows while his program Kim Byung Mans Law of The Jungle beat out Running Man to take the High Excellence Program Award. With Kim Byung Man continuing to put in a strong performance over the year, there is a reasonable chance that we could see him moving up the ladder and taking the Grand Award this year.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled Jungle

The other nominee with a fighting chance is Kang Ho Dong. While Barefoot Friends was hardly what you call a success, his Saturday program Star King has managed to keep in the ratings war against long time rival MBC Infinity Challenge while being well clear of KBSs Immortal Song 2. A lot of this ratings rise can be attributed to the return of the energetic MC himself given that the show rarely managed to get anywhere near Infinity Challenge during the period where Kang Ho Dong was absent from the show. Whether this singular performance will be enough to offset the disappointment of Barefoot friends remains to be seen.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled Jungle

Finally, lets quickly look at Running Man and Yoo Jae Suk. For the most part the show has been a steady performer over the year. While its combined rating with its Sunday partner show has seen the whole Sunday show rate below 10% for most of the year, individual ratings for Running Man itself have continued to remain competitive against its rivals. Despite that, it has still dropped in ratings year on year. A lot of that drop can be attributed to the amazing success of MBCs new line of Sunday programs (Daddy! Where Are We Going  + Real Men). In recent weeks, however, it did appear like Running Man was starting to regain some lost ground with the slight drop in interest in MBCs shows. But again, it has been dealt another hit with the success of KBSs 1 Night, 2 Day Season 3. Given that Yoo Jae Suks chances for a Grand Award rests on the success of Running Man, this slight loss of steam might just be enough that SBS decides to go with one of the other candidates.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards - Running Men in a Star Filled Jungle

Still, it doesnt look like either Running Man or Yoo Jae Suk will be losing the Viewers Choice awards. As we previously reported, both show and MC are leading the viewer polls by a wide margin and is certain to win those respective viewer choice awards come Monday.

The awards for the Runners, the Jungle and the Stars, the 2013 SBS Entertainment Awards live blog will kick off  on December 30 starting at 8:00PM KST. Well be setting up and chatting until the actual show starts at 8:55PM. You can see what time that is in your respective time zones by going to this page. Or you can just look at the countdown below. I hope to see you all there!

So bookmark this page, set your alarms or look out for updates on Soompis Twitter and Facebook. Well let you when we are about to start!

Best of 2013 Recap: Live Performances That Shined The Most

Best of 2013 Recap: Live Performances That Shined The Most

Best of 2013 Recap: Live Performances That Shined The Most Best of 2013 Recap: Live Performances That Shined The Most Best of 2013 Recap: Live Performances That Shined The Most In the world of K-pop, there is one thing that stands out: the sheer amount of music shows artists perform in. In America, with TLC gone, there isn’t a real weekly music show that is easily accessible. We only witness artists performing their singles in award shows and when they are promoting it on different talk shows. But in Korea, the situation is vastly different. At last count, there are seven weekly music shows – Arirang’s Simply K-pop, SBS MTV’s The Show, MBC Music’s Show Champion, and the ‘Big Four’; Mnet’s M Countdown, KBS’s Music Bank, MBC’s Music Core and SBS’s Inkigayo. So when one has been knee-deep in K-pop for some time, it’s no wonder fans are able to not just appreciate these live performances from their favorite acts but are also ably ready to say why.

But what truly makes a live performance shine from the rest? From the poll that you Seoulmates voted in, three artists came out on top for this year: SHINee, EXO and VIXX.

SHINee’s lives, ever since their debut with “Replay,” have always been point on. While we may have witnessed a crack here and there and an off-note as well, especially during their “Juliette” era, SHINee has always been consistent. For their releases this year, you guys have voted three of their songs into first, second and third place – “Everybody,” “Dream Girl” and “Symptoms,”

In first place, and rightfully so in my opinion, is “Everybody.” It shows the accuracy that SHINee has and the ability of SHINee to take on new types of dances. They started as an RnB influenced group and now with a whole different sound, they also bring a dance that is far different from their other dances. Like “Sherlock,” “Everybody” brings to mind of images. In fact, their performances of “Everybody” reminded me of I.aM.mE with the use of images. They conformed their bodies to create images of them as robots to suit the robotic nature of the song. While the song is not the best in SHINee’s discography, the dance is worthy of all accolades one may get.

“Everybody” is a song that was truly meant for performances and I can’t imagine any other group but SHINee being able to pull it off so easily. The live performances were carried largely by their energy and said energy brought out moments in the live performances rarely seen.

But when it comes to dancing, SHINee is unparalleled and I can go on forever talking about their dances. But let’s focus on their two big releases this year that also took the first and second place. In second place was “Dream Girl” and while they ad head mics on, they made the use of microphone stands in their dance. It’s hard to use props in dances and equally hard when one does tricks with these props. That SHINee did all that they did in “Dream Girl” and still pulled it off was amazing. And because there are props, it was only about time that something would go wrong – and it did when Minho’s microphone stand suddenly broke during their comeback stage. In a show of professionalism, SHINee managed to remedy the situation in seconds and continued on dancing around Jonghyun as the main vocalist belts out another of his famous high notes.

As a whole, their “Dream Girl” promotions were consistent, what more can you expect from SHINee?

The last performance from SHINee is unique in its being the only non-main single to place in the top ten. While it was only performed several times, it is probably the best track out of their latest release. An obvious fan-favorite from the very start, Im sure Im not the only one who was happy when SHINee performed the song as part of their comeback stages for Everybody. The dance suits the beat of the song and while it is not as dance heavy as their main singles, it is understandable. Like any SHINee performance, they do it with stable vocals, great charisma and sharp dance moves that fit the beat and mood of the song.

Leaving the SHINee World behind, EXO is not that shabby when it comes to dance performances. “Wolf,” had most of the international K-pop community in two corners: those who liked it and those who didn’t. While the dance held promise, there was just something missing and while some may rag of “Wolf,” let’s give some points to EXO for pulling it off and the sheer uniqueness and eye catching performance. Because if not, they will eat you like a mouthful of cheese.

Kidding.

All jests aside, the uniqueness of EXO’s situation in terms of having two sub-units and the sheer amount of members was fully realized in their single of their repackage album, “Growl.” Not only did the song become an instant hit in Korea, but also the international K-pop community accepted it with open arms. And yes Exotics, you can start singing EXO’s cover of “Open Arms” right now. Not only was “Growl” a humongous step up, the performances were unique, especially when one tries to recreate the same effect as seen in the music video.

Honestly, it’s hard for a group with twelve members to each get their time in the spotlight. It took Yesung three months before he got his first close-up. Or was it Eunhyuk? But I digress. This is why the way the live performances of EXO is so genius. By splitting the group in half for a verse and chorus each, the members get their own time to shine without taking anything from the other members. While I am tempted to cite their MAMA stage, their Inkigayo comeback stage has got to be one of the best performances this year. True, it is a pre-recorded live but the way it was shot not only called back the music video, but also showed the dance performance in all its glory.

In K-pop, presentation of the whole package is a big thing so it’s no surprise that the dance is the major factor and in the case of VIXX, this goes hand in hand with their concepts as their dances are influenced by their concepts and this has been magnified with their latest release, “Voodoo Doll,” which ranked in at number five at the close of the poll.

On a personal level, I see VIXX as your typical K-pop group but with a theatrical twist, which may be the reason why I love them so much. Unlike other groups, VIXX’s performances are highlighted by the haunting nature of their concept that is portrayed in every factor of their live performances. No one can truly pull off what VIXX can do and they are K-pop’s resident Princes of Darkness. Their dark, gothic concepts are their unique niche without deviating that far from the tried and tested sound of K-pop. This is made even better because their concepts are also inherently within their dance, making it seem as if we are getting a number from a Broadway show as opposed to a run-of-the-mill performance.

VIXX are not bad dancers as well and some have even said that their dances at times can be very SHINee like with their precision. The only difference is that VIXX is very focused on the use of formation to make images to underline the intent of the song. In “Hyde,” this was seen through splitting the group in Team Jekyll and Team Hyde. In “Voodoo Doll,” they use a skull-pin-microphone as a prop. In the original choreography, when one person stabs another or a part of themselves, the others react as if they have also been stabbed. It’s not just the stabbing which makes “Voodoo Doll” so enticing to watch. It’s also the movements of each member as they imitate the swing of a pendulum and cross their fingers as they sing of hopeful wishes coming true.

With the massive amount of great live performances to choose from, it’s easy to imagine that there are some that one would live to talk about as well. In fact, more than half of the current roster of idol groups is able to pull off live performances in accordance to the factors above. Honorable mentions are Spica’s “Tonight,” Block B’s “Very Good,” G-Dragon’s “Crooked” and Shinhwa’s “This Love.”

All in all, this was a good year for K-pop in terms of releases; one just can’t wait for 2014 to start. If this keeps, up, we may just be on our way to having a fantastic 2014 as well, and it all starts with the return of TVXQ.

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A CharmWe came, we saw and while we didnt quite conquer, it was more than good enough to give this another go. Thanks to the interest we saw from the 2013 KBS Entertainment Awards live blog, we have decided to press forward and continue our live blog coverage of the other year-end events. This time, though, we are going for the full double whammy, going where no writing team on this site has gone before, solving a dilemma brought forth by the evils that is event schedule clashes.

In the interest of  fair competition and all that good will stuff, most of the broadcasters have decided that the best way of taking glory away from each other was to schedule events in such a way that they clash horribly on the same day. This was a problem because the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejon happens on the same day as the 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards. Certainly we couldnt just ignore the SBS Gayo Daejun, but we definitely didnt want to miss out on all that juicy variety show awards. What a predicament. But why choose from one when you can just have both?

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

Thats right, we have just decided to have our cake and eat it too by covering both events with our fancy new live blog system. In the red corner, youll have lordbordem, providing you with live coverage of 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards. Meanwhile in the blue corner, well have our awesome editing team comprised of crystalcove and halves in unison providing all of you K-Pop loving fans with live coverage of 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun.  It really is the best of both worlds.

If youre not interested in the rough and tumble of the MBC variety show world, filled with children and their dads, soldiers that do nothing but eat and a bunch of middle aged blokes doing random things for laughter, then you may direct yourselves to the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun article here to see all the glorious details about the year-end K-Pop extravagance overload.

2013 MBC Entertainment Awards [Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

Now lets talk very briefly about 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards. In some ways this would be the first proper MBC Entertainment Awards in three years. Previous years have been rather lukewarm affairs owing to massive strikes over at MBC Illsan Dream Center. Because of these strikes, weve had many months of irregular scheduling and confusion for both the viewers and the staff. In some ways, the previous awards have reflected these issues. Two years ago in 2011, MBC suddenly changed over to a Best Program of the Year award as their hallmark award, eliminating the customary Grand Award. That award went to the I Am A Singer team.

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

In 2012, MBC decided to reinstate the Grand Award, awarding it to comedian Park Myung Soo. 2012 also happened to be one of MBCs worst years in terms of strikes, with the general MBC staff striking for more than six months, putting a stop to the vast majority of MBC programs in that time frame.

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

Now lets come back to 2013. This year has been a great year for MBC variety shows. Shows such as Infinity Challenge and Radio Star have continued to perform strongly over the last year while shows such as the revamped We Got Married Season 4 have been able to claw back some of the ground they had lost previously. But the star of 2013 has definitely been the completely reversal of fortunes for MBCs flagship Sunday programs. After the end of I Am A Singer, MBC failed to provide viewers with compelling content during the highly competitive Sunday night time slot. At some points, MBC was trailing competitors such as Running Man and  1 Night, 2 Days by almost 15% in ratings.

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

However, all of that changed with the introduction of Daddy! Where Are We Going? and Real Men. The new programs were a revelation for MBC and saw them immediately shoot back up to the top of the food chain. Daddy! Where Are We Going? was so influential that it caused a boom in interest for children related shows, with KBS introducing shows such as Superman Has Returned to try and piggyback some of that success.

[Live Blog] 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards - Third Times A Charm

Suffice to say, both Sunday programs have a good chance of sweeping up the vast majority of results on Sunday. However, we must not forget about the elephant in the room and that is Infinity Challenge. Their 2013 Freeway Song Festival was a huge success, once again sweeping the charts and has topped the ratings on Saturdays for more than 10 months. Suffice to say, they are going to be hard to beat on the viewer voted Best Couple award and Most Popular Program awards. In the case of the best couple award, I dont see anyone else beating out the behemoth that is the Jung Hyung DonG-Dragon couple.

Whatever the case, we will find out who wins what at the 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards on December 29 starting at 8:00pm (KST). You can see what time that is in your respective time zones by going to this page. Or you can just look at the countdown below. I hope to see you all there!

If the thought of watching great artists like Lee Hyori performing with CL, or watching Infinite give off the opening performance, watching Nine Muses perform at one of these events for the first time and other acts of extravagance put forward by SBS dont perk your interest, then feel free to drop by the 2013 MBC Entertainment Awards.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun - Redefining The Meaning Of Extravagence

2013 SBS Gayo DaejunMusic Makes Miracles Happen There is usually a few things that are certain in life. You get older, the sun will rise in the morning, you will most definitely stub your toe on the corner even when you think you wont, and lastly SBS will also put on a massively extravagant event during the end of the year to celebrate all things K-Pop.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun - Redefining The Meaning Of Extravagence

SBS looks to outdo itself this year with a whole range of amazing performances. One of the first performances confirmed is Lee Hyoris performance of Miss Korea, which will have non-celebrities participating on stage with the veteran singer. We then have the amazing collaboration with Lee Hyori and 2NE1s CL, something you wont see anywhere else owing to the fact that YG Entertainment wont be participating in any of the other end of year song festivals.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun - Redefining The Meaning Of Extravagence

There is also going to be a special stage with some of the best solo talents around. Verbal Jint, Bumkey and San E will be collaborating together to perform some of their greatest hits this year and that will certainly be one to look out for.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun - Redefining The Meaning Of Extravagence

Then we get to the sheer array of talent that will be appearing at 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun. There is just too many names to list out but like we said before, this will be the only end of year song festival featuring YG artists. We then have a massive list of idols including Nine Muses, EXO, A Pink, miss A, Secret, 2PM, Girls Generation, KARA, G-Dragon, Park Jin Young, SHINee, Tiger JK, Teen Top, INFINITE, Block B, Hello Venus, Ailee and the list just keeps going on. Suffice to say, pretty much every singer that has released at least one song this year will be participating in this event.

This is  great and all, but reading about the event is only half the fun. Good news because SBS will be streaming the event live on their live stream page here. Youll be able to watch the event as it happens on SBS and then read our live blog to find out exactly what is being said. It really is the best way of enjoying this event.

Extravagance galore, 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun will kick off on December 29 starting at 8:00pm (KST). You can see what time that is in your respective time zones by going to this page. Or you can just look at the countdown below. I hope to see you all there!

2013 KBS Entertainment Awards - Live Blog Introduction

The 2013 KBS Entertainment Awards is a celebration of all that was great in the world of KBS variety shows in 2013. It will be hosted by Shin Dong Yeop, Goo Hara, and Seo In Guk. This year of 2013, however, hasnt been very kind to KBS. Core shows such as 1 Night 2 Days Season 2 and Qualifications of Men underperformed against their rivals and were eventually cancelled while new shows such as Moonlight Prince also failed to make a mark on the variety show scene.

On the flip side, the success of stable shows such as Gag Concert, Happy Together Season 3 and Talk Show Hello has given KBS some breathing room so that they can completely overhaul the rest of their program line up. The result of this has been a large increase in ratings for revamped shows such as 1 Night 2 Day Season 3, along with positive press for new shows such as Our Neighbourhood Sports and Superman Has Returned. KBS is definitely ending the year on a high note as they hope to continue this momentum into the new year.

Last years Grand Award winner was Shin Dong Yeop, while Gag Concert won the Best Program award. Both star and show will be looking to win these awards once again. KBS has published their list of nominees for the Best Program award. They are:

Gag Concert Immortal Song 2 Talk Show Hello Our Neighbourhood Sports Human Condition Happy Sunday (1 Night, 2 Days Season 3 + Superman has Returned) Happy Together  As of writing, KBS has not yet published a list of nominees for the Grand Award.
