Samsung Electronics started producing semiconductor chips at a plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province on Tuesday.
Samsung said the plant is the biggest of its kind in Korea.
Samsung announced the same day that it plans to spend an additional W14.4 trillion to increase chip making lines at the plant by 2021. It will also invest W6 trillion for a semiconductor plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, and W1 trillion for a plant to make display panels in Asan, South Chungcheong Province.
With such massive investments in semiconductor and display sectors, Samsung expects to create some 440,000 jobs.
