Directed by Kim Dong Won, ‘R2B: Return to Base’ features a star-studded cast including Rain (‘Fugitive Plan B‘, ‘Ninja Assassin‘), Shin Se Kyung (‘Fashion King‘, ‘Blue Salt‘), Yoo Jun Sang (‘You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly‘, ‘Moss‘), Kim Sung Soo (‘I Like it Hot‘), Lee Hana (‘Fair Love‘, ‘Triple‘), and Lee Jong Suk (‘As One‘, ‘High Kick 3‘).

A South Korean Elite Black Eagles Air Force pilot Tae-hun (Rain) finds himself transferred to a combat flying unit after a cocky, unplanned, and dangerous air show demonstration. On the first day of his transfer to F15K, he meets Cheol-hui (Yoo Jun Sang), the unit’s own top gun. Tae-hun is free-spirited, whereas Cheol-hui plays by the rules, and the two come into conflict almost immediately. However, Tae-hun quickly befriends his other colleagues: Dae-seo, Yu-jin, and Seok-hyeon. He also falls in love with Se-yeong (Shin Se Kyung), who is in charge of maintenance. Tae-hun continues his free-spirited ways and his antics get the entire unit suspended from duty. The world outside the base makes its presence known when a North Korean MIG fighter is discovered heading toward the South. Tae-hun and the rest of the squad are put back on active duty, and a reconnaissance mission turns into an all out fight, ending in Dae-seo’s untimely death and Seok-hyeon’s disappearance. Eventually Cheol-hui and Tae-hun come to an emotional understanding and the F15K makes preparations to stop a war and rescue their missing comrade.

[Quick Guest Review] Korean Movie

[Quick Guest Review] Korean Movie "R2B: Return to Base"

Rain returns to Korea with a big blockbuster starring in "R2B: Return to Base", a remake of Shin Sang-Ok's film "The Red Muffler". It tells the story of a hot shot pilot, Captain Jung Tae-Yoon played by Rain who is sent back to the force after a dangerous stunt with the Elite Black Eagles during an air show.

Rain does a good job at portraying the cocky pilot. There isn't anything too outstanding about his performance but he does get you to laugh a few times. He is also supported by a great cast who all play their parts well. One in particular was Kim Sung-soo. This was the first time I have seen him in a film and he played the part of the old academy senior and flight leader. I immediately liked him from his first scene with Rain. All the actors made you believe they were all once close friends.

One thing though, this film is set up as an action film. The trailer gives you two minutes from one of the plane battles and you expect to see a lot more of this. However, the scene they show is one of the two battles that take place in the film. The film seems to focus more on Tae-Yoon trying to woo over his mechanic played by Sin Se-kyeong and as well as beating his rivals in the air games. Still, the movie is a lot of fun and I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you are looking for a fun movie or are a big fan of Rain, then this is the film for you. Rain's performance in "R2B" is a huge step-up from his last role of playing a ninja. I give it 3 out of 5 stars and will probably make its way to my movie collection.

[Movie Review] “R2B: Return to Base” featuring Rain and Shin Se Kyung

[Movie Review] “R2B: Return to Base” featuring Rain and Shin Se Kyung

[Spoilers] Movie Review: ‘R2B: Return to Base

Earlier today, Rain‘s latest aerial action film ‘R2B: Return to Base‘ (English title: ’Soar Into the Sun‘) headed into select North American theaters.

Plot Synopsis

Under the direction of Kim Dong Won, ‘R2B: Return to Base’ is a star-studded military aerial action film inspired by the 1963 Korean film ‘Red Scarf‘. Rain (‘Fugitive Plan B‘, ‘Ninja Assassin‘) stars as a cocky fighter pilot by the name of Taehoon. Although Taehoon is an excellent pilot, his big head leads him to his demotion from his elite Black Eagles squad to the 21st Fighter Wing.

Taehoon immediately butts heads with the 21st Fighter Wing’s Falcon squad leader Chulhee, played by Yoo Jun Sang (‘You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly‘, ‘Moss‘). Chulhee is the squad’s most talented pilot and has never lost a flying competition. Unlike Taehoon, Chulhee is a stick-to-the-rule-book type of pilot.

The 21st Fighter Wing patrols the airspace around the border between North and South Korea. One day an unidentified combat plane enters their airspace, and Taehoon is forced to work alongside Chulhee and the rest of the squad in order to protect the safety of the innocent civilians below.

Other noteable mentions include actress Shin Se Kyung (‘Fashion King‘, ‘Blue Salt‘) who stars as the talented and tough, pretty-faced airplane technician Seyoung, Kim Sung Soo (‘I Like it Hot‘) who stars as Taehoon’s close senior and squad leader Daeseo, Lee Hana (‘Fair Love‘, ‘Triple‘) who stars as Taehoon’s former flight school classmate Eugene, and Lee Jong Suk (‘As One‘, ‘High Kick 3‘) who stars as the rookie pilot of the 21st Fighter Wing, Seok Hyun, who is both really excited and really nervous about being a fighter pilot.

My Opinion (Note: This reflects the opinions of the author, and not necessarily those of allkpop.)

Korea has had a fair share of excellent war movies such as ‘Taegukki‘ and ‘71: Into the Fire‘. Naturally I hoped that ‘R2B: Return to Base’ would meet the high standards of military movies in Korea. Unfortunately, ‘R2B: Return to Base’ was quite a let down. Maybe it was due to the fact that this movie was not based on a true story, but it completely lacked originality. It seemed as if the creators of the film sat down and watched all the Hollywood military action films in existence, picked out all of their favorite scenes, and mashed them together to create ‘R2B: Return to Base’.

This mashup of concepts and ideas had a negative impact on the movie’s storyline and realism as well. On one hand, Scenes would suddenly cut in and out rather than naturally flowing from one scene to the next. There were too many short distinct scenes and not enough development and continuity. While the editors cut both kiss scenes between Rain and Shin Se Kyung, they failed to edit out other excessive scenes throughout the film. On the other hand, there were many unrealistic elements in the military aspects of the film. There were multiple occasions in which the pilots in the film would make decisions that were utterly far-fetched. If you have any knowledge or background in how threats within the military (or any sort of battle) are handled, you will be frustrated by this film.

On a positive note, the camera work and computer graphics in the film were top-notch. Aerial action films are practically unheard of in Korean cinema, but ‘R2B: Return to Base’ tested their limits by turning to Wolfe Air Aviation to film the high altitude flight scenes. Wolfe Air Aviation is the aerial camera team used for blockbuster films such as ‘Inception‘, ‘Iron Man‘, and the ‘Transformers‘ series. The aerial scenes were perfected after about 10 months of post-production.

Though Rain was successfully able to pass the g-force tests required to become a pilot, ‘R2B: Return to Base’ did not have what it takes to become a successful aerial action film. The storyline is very predictable and unoriginal, and military-based elements are unrealistic. However, if you are hoping to watch this film just to see the adorable yet sexy Rain or Shin Se Kyung on the big screen, by all means, go ahead and watch it.

Rain & Shin Se Kyungs kiss in R2B: Return to Base revealed

Rain & Shin Se Kyungs kiss in R2B: Return to Base revealed

Still cuts of Rain and Shin Se Kyung’s kiss in ‘R2B: Return to Base’ released

Shin Se Kyung and Jung Ji Hoon (Rain)s hidden kiss scene in R2B: Return 2 Base was revealed.

On 24th, CJ Entertainment revealed the kiss scene that was cut off.

Previously, Shin Se Kyung attended the media premiere of R2B: Return 2 Base, which took place at CGV Wangsipri branch, and said, “It was great. We actually had two kiss scenes together but both were edited out by the director to make the movie progress more smoothly. Seeing the final product, I can see why the decision was made, but I do feel a bit disappointed that they were left out.”

The production team decided to reveal the scene for the fans, and it showed Shin Se Kyung and Jung Ji Hoon having romantic kisses in different situations. While the first one shows them on a romantic date, the second depicts Rain’s safely returned, as evidenced by the cheers of his fellow soldiers in the background.

On the other hand, R2B: Return 2 Base is currently the hottest movie at movie theaters, and the hot wave will be spreading even further for a while.

Due to his military duties, Rain has been unable to watch his own movie, R2B: Return to Base, but fortunately for the singer-turned-actor and lucky fans, he received the chance to make surprise appearance at a screening.

On August 22 at a CGV movie theater in Wangsimni in Seoul, the cast of R2B: Return to Base were giving their greetings to the fans in the audience when Kim Sung Soo knowingly asked if there were any soldiers in the audience, “Who here is currently a soldier? Raise your hand.”

After hearing this, Rain raised his hand while was seating among the audience, making a surprise appearance that shocked his fans.

Rain had received a four nights, five day vacation from his military duties and was able to finally see his own movie.

Rain will be returning to his base on August 23.
