The NBA recently shared a photo of Jay Park at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio posing in a Cavs jersey. As of June 14, the post gained more than 2,700 comments. Most of the international netizens, who seem unfamiliar with K-Pop, left racist and rude remarks about the rapper.
Ignorant questions were asked, such as, “Is he Kim Jong Un cousin?”, ”Who is that dog eater?”, “Who cares about Kpop anyway?”, “Who’s this Kpooop?”
Meanwhile, some defended Jay Park by explaining his numerous achievements and success as a K-Pop artist.
“Anyone who doesn’t know. Jay Park is a Korean Rapper and RnB singer who was raised in America. He’s also the CEO of his own independent hip-hop label AOMG. And yes he’s famous. Just because some of you don’t know him doesn’t make him a nobody,” explained one fan.
Several netizens talked about the racist reactions that frequently take place when K-Pop artists make an appearance in the Western market. One used BTS’ recent win at ‘2017 Billboard Music Awards’ as an example and stated, “I love how when someone Asian comes on the big screen that people don’t know, they immediately slander their name. was completely evident during the music awards when there were tweets about a kpop group winning an award. you don’t see Asians talking down upon famous white people, just because they don’t know that person exists.”
Another commented, “As soon as I saw the pic I knew exactly where the comments were heading. I know people. I know social media. No hope for humanity.”
