Korea’s already low birth rate is decreasing at an alarming pace, with the number of babies expected to be born this year dropping below 400,000 for the first time. Statistics Korea on Sunday forecasts the number of newborns this year at around 360,000.
The number in the first five months of this year was about 159,600, a decline of over 12 percent from the same period last year.
Korea has seen the number of newborns fall by nearly half in a single generation. The agency pinpointed the high costs of education and childcare as major causes.
