K-Music To Have Strongest Showing in SXSW 2013 in Austin: f(x) Leads Kpop Event? SXSW in Austin 2013In 2010, only one Korean music act got through for the prestigious event in Austin. Fast forward to to 2013, and we see the strongest showing of Korean music to-date at the said event. What makes it even more exciting is that a Hallyu favorite, SM Entertainment's f(x) gets to have a stage.

SXSW is a gathering place for hippies, indies, and technophiles.Dubbed as the "World's Capital of Live Music", many top acts in music have their roots tracing back to a stage in SXSW.The event which now also features a film and interactive stream of conferences is expected to attract crowds in the millions.A yearly tradition, SXSW becomes that moment in March where arts and technology collide and boasts the most lucrative of guest lists.

To have a stage at SXSW involves a rigorous vetting process, even with the thousands of stages happening nearly at the same time during the festival.Applications run up to the thousands as well and not all will be guaranteed a stage. This makes the victory of having ten Korean music acts showcasing at the event even sweeter.

The feature Korean acts are as follows. Most will be performing on Tuesday night,March 12th, at the Elysium for the K-pop Night Out event.

Real life "Producer" couple (Music Bank & 1N2D PD"s) revealed to have gotten married

The June 13 episode of KBS 2TV"s "Entertainment Weekly" featured a real life "Producer" couple! The program revealed the couple got married after spending hours and hours working together, just like the on-air producers in "Producer".

"Music Bank" producer Shin Soo Jung had married her senior, Park In Seok, the current producer of "1 Night 2 Days." She said, "I married my senior. Because we spend so much time together... you have to marry someone who"s next to you."

In the current popular drama "Producer", Gong Hyo Jin is taking on the role as "Music Bank" producer while Cha Tae Hyun takes on the role of a "1 Night 2 Days" producer. The storyline as of now draws a complicated four-way love line between Gong Hyo Jin, Kim Soo Hyun, Cha Tae Hyun, and IU.

However, viewers have speculated and questioned if the drama is actually based on this real-life love story and that Cha Tae Hyun and Gong Hyo Jin may very well end up together in the end.

Well, there"s only a few more episodes before we find out what happens. How would you like to see the couples paired up on "Producer"?

Which KPop Song Dominate Weekly KPop Music Chart 2015 Week 3

Which KPop Song Dominate Weekly KPop Music Chart 2015 Week 3

Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2015 – March Week 3

It was a three way battle for the top spot this week. Two-week champion Shinhwa’s “Sniper” battled two new top 10 entries. This song swept all the music shows last week so it is not a surprise “Sniper” won by a big margin here. As mentioned last week, this is Shinhwa’s first No. 1 song on our chart in nine years. Nine years! Congratulations to Shinhwa!

4Minute’s “Crazy” still remains at No. 2 while last week’s champion VIXX’s “Love Equation” fell two spots to No. 3 this week.

There are two new songs in the top 10 this week. Moving up 11 spots to No. 5 is the first ever top 10 solo hit for Junsu. His song “Flower” comes from his third album of the same name. Junsu had multiple top 10 hits as a member of TVXQ and JYJ but as a solo artist this is the first time. “Flower” is an RB style ballad with a magnificent string sound. Junsu’s vocal stands out, especially in the chorus part. Epik High’s Tablo is the featured rapper on this song and we can hear his unique rap style.

Moving up 12 spots to No. 9 is MC Mong’s latest hit “Love Mash.” The controversial rapper returned last year with his sixth album which was a huge success. This latest hit is from his new mini-album “Song For You.” It is a rock band style song which is a new try for MC Mong. Singer Yoon Gun co-wrote the song together with MC Mong. The lyrics are about how much a man changes after he falls in love with a woman of his dream.

Which KPop Song Dominate Weekly KPop Music Chart 2015 This Week

Which KPop Song Dominate Weekly KPop Music Chart 2015 This Week

Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2015 – March Week 2

It was a three way battle for the top spot this week. Two-week champion 4Minute, with “Crazy,” battled two new top 10 entries, both male groups.

VIXX scores their first ever No. 1 song on our chart with “Love Equation,” moving up from No. 15 last week. VIXX had a shared No. 1 song “Winter Confession” with their labelmates at the beginning of last year, but “Love Equation” is truly the first time they top our chart. This song is the title track from VIXX’s mini-album “Boys Record.” It has a unique blend of a trendy synth sound and exciting variable beats. Member Ravi took part in writing the lyrics and the rap. “Love Equation” swept all the music show rankings last week and it is no surprise to find it on top of our chart as well. Congratulations to VIXX!

Moving down one spot to No. 2 is 4Minute’s “Crazy.” This song narrowly lost out to “Love Equation” by two points. It is still going strong on many charts.

Not far behind the top two is the second and last new entries to the top 10 this week. Ageless wonder male group Shinhwa has their latest hit “Sniper” moves up 17 spots to No. 3. This song is the title track of Shinhwa’s 12th album “We.” It is an electronic dance song with powerful beats. The lyrics are about a man who has his eye set on a woman he is attracted to, like a sniper. Shinhwa hasn’t hit No. 1 on our chart in nine years (last time was “Once In A Lifetime” in 2006), and this song may be their best chance, as it will challenge for the top spot next week.

Song Chang-sik: A life immersed in music

Song Chang-sik: A life immersed in music

The fingertips of singer Song Chang-sik are calloused because the 68-year-old singer has been practicing guitar every day for the past 50 years. By Kwon Hyuk-jae

If last year"s music scene was all about the return of old boys from the 1990s, this year"s music industry will be concentrating on the sounds of the 1960s and "70s, when folk music was mainstream. And in the middle of that nostalgic trend is musical hall C"est Si Bon. C"est Si Bon opened in 1953 in Mugyo-dong, Jung District, central Seoul. Until its closure in 1969, Korea"s first music hall was a hangout for musicians like Song Chang-sik and Cho Young-nam, who represented popular culture of the "60s and "70s. Song, Cho and other regulars of C"est Si Bon are still spotted sporadically in the music scene today. C"est Si Bon was the only place back then in which ordinary people could listen to pop songs.

Actor Jo Bok-rae acts the role of Song Chang-sik in the film "C"est Si Bon", which is centered on a music hall that opened in 1953 in Mugyo-dong, central Seoul. The music hall has produced outstanding singers of the 1960s and 1970s such as Song.

"K-pop or the Korean Wave would not exist today [without C"est Si Bon]", recalled Lee Baek-cheon, a music critic and a former producer who worked for the now-defunct broadcast channel TBC, during an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo. The interview was conducted last September. "They [singers who performed at C"est Si Bon] were the first generation of Korean singers who began to write and sing songs", he added. With the recent release of the nostalgic feature film "C"est Si Bon", the JoongAng Ilbo recently visited Song Chang-sik, a member of folk duo Twin Folio. Song formed the folk duo with Yoon Hyung-joo, and the duo is considered synonymous with C"est Si Bon.Song is also credited for opening a new chapter in folk music. Although the film walks a fine line between fiction and non-fiction by adding in a third figure to Twin Folio, the film entertains filmgoers with a catalogue of folk songs from the "60s and "70s during its two-hour running time. Here are excerpts from an interview with the 68-year-old Song, who still plays guitar for hours every day. The interview was held earlier this month at a small room in Ssonger, a live music cafe located in Sinjang-dong, Hanam, Gyeonggi. Q.In the film "C"est Si Bon", actor Jo Bok-rae plays the role of Song Chang-sik. A.I was impressed by his singing. In the past, actors didn"t put much effort into singing even though they were doing a musical film, but Cho was different. To be honest, I was dubious about the film because it tells of a simple story that happened about 50 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. You formed Twin Folio with Yoon in 1968. What was it like to see a younger version of yourself in the film?A film is just a film. The film doesn"t reflect my younger days because I was homeless until I joined C"est Si Bon. I spent two winters with no place to sleep. Once I joined C"est Si Bon, I could eat, sleep and sing. I couldn"t have been happier. If you could go back to the days when you were in your 20s, would you? No thanks. I"m content with my life. But if I had to go back, I would choose to live alone rather than getting married. C"est Si Bon belongs to an era of people who are now in their 50s and 60s, but it keeps inspiring singers, TV shows and even films. People may feel nostalgic with songs from those days, but I don"t have entirely good memories [of them]. That"s one reason I didn"t reunite with Yoon under the name of Twin Folio. But people raved about Twin Folio"s music. All the hits like "White Handkerchief" and "Wedding Cake" were adapted songs. It would be more accurate to say that people liked our music because there was nothing to enjoy back then other than those songs. Koreans usually love to eat yeot [traditional Korean confectionery] or drink sikhye [traditional sweet rice beverage], but we suddenly gave them chocolates. But those chocolates were fake ones that looked like real chocolates. You majored in vocal music. I got a scholarship when I entered Seoul Arts High School, but I decided to drop out when I was a sophomore because I couldn"t afford to pay for vocal lessons. After quitting, I began to study all the basics of music such as harmonics and counterpoint as I spent most of my time at libraries and secondhand bookstores. That was when I decided to live for music, although I was living like a beggar. You were recognized because of Twin Folio but "Piri Bunen Sanai", one of your hits, became a turning point in your career. I suddenly had to join the military when I began to build up my career as a singer. I was supposed to be exempted because my father passed away during the Korean War while he was serving as a police officer. But I had to join anyway. I think I paid for fame. But I was able to transition into music thanks to two shows I watched during that time. One was a blues singing competition that was held by African-American soldiers who were based in Korea and the other one was Jeonju Daesaseupnori [a competition for gukak performers in which participants compete against one another by performing traditional Korean musical instruments]. Those were competitions for amateurs, but I realized there were more people who are musically accomplished than I was. I doubted my musical ability and cried a lot, too. I thought I needed to learn about traditional Korean music, too. And then I made "Piri Bunen Sanai" [meaning a man who plays a double-reed instrument]. After your military service, your career reached a peak with the release of "Piri Bunen Sanai", and a couple of more songs became huge hits after that. But you soon became entangled in a series of scandals. You were involved in a marijuana scandal in 1976 and were imprisoned in 1977 for violating the reserve forces act.I was in prison for about 20 days and I studied how to arrange jazz songs in that cell. I didn"t have time to learn about it until I got imprisoned. [Thanks to the imprisonment], I was able to arrange almost all songs since then. I wanted to know every tiny bit of music, and that is my motto. Rumor has it that you"ve made more than 1,000 songs so far. No. I just jot things down when I come across melodies and lyrics. I"ve been playing guitar for about two hours every day for the past 50 years. If you skip practicing just one day, you lose control of your guitar. I"ve never seen a musician who is trying as hard as me. You perform for five days at this live music cafe. But the stage seems a little small for you. There are about 180 seats and this was designed for myself. I was involved in every process of building this live music cafe, from designing the stage to construction to inspection. I studied computer-aided design for five years because I wanted to build my own house. This type of live music cafe is the best place for singers like me. You have different a audience and a different vibe every day. You also assemble your own computer. I return home around 2 a.m. [after a live performance] and then I turn on my computer when I don"t feel like sleeping. And I check all the latest computer parts so that I can keep my computer updated all the time. A computer is very logical and music is the same. You can"t create music by just resorting to your sensibility. You have to polish your skills every day if you want to produce the best kind. BY PARK JEONG-HO [[email protected]]

K-Pop Music Video Life Lessons: How To Heal A Broken Heart According To Girl's Day's 'I Miss You (Want To See)'

K-Pop Music Video Life Lessons: How To Heal A Broken Heart According To Girl's Day's 'I Miss You (Want To See)'

Still hurting from a breakup? Girl"s Day offers a few ways for you to get over the split-up slump.

(Photo : Girl"s Day MV) Hug A Warm Blanket.Like Hyeri, curling up in bed and putting layers of blankets around you will keep those shivers away. But more than the comforting heat, the fabric hug should simulate the act of hugging - and hugging just makes everything nicer even after a breakup!

(Photo : Girl"s Day MV) Cook Your Favorite Dish.Shop for groceries and cook your favorite dish ala Minah. We recommend a bowl of hot delicious soup to fill you up and get you energized.

(Photo : Girl"s Day MV) Write A Letter. Put down all your thoughts in a letter or journal. Sojin shows you that the writing experience can be quite emotional - you may cry, and this is OK - but the outpouring of words and feelings is also very therapeutic.

(Photo : Girl"s Day MV) Go On A Trip.Pack up your most fabulous outfits in a bag and go somewhere far away. The distance can help you heal your heart wounds, and traveling to exotic places will give you exciting new memories to treasure.

(Photo : Girl"s Day MV) Start A Pillow Fight. But if you really want to let that anger out, follow Hyeri"s lead and release your frustrations by slamming your pillow until all the feathers and cotton fall out. Now that you"re free from all that negativity, you can step out feeling so much better.

Music & Lyrics: Nell and Their Laments of Life

Music & Lyrics: Nell and Their Laments of Life

20120410_seoulbeats_nell MusicLyrics: Nell and Their Laments of Life Written by Laura On July 23, 2014 For the newest installation of MusicLyrics, lets leave the world of pop music for a while and take a look at the alternative side. When it comes to indie music in South Korea, Nell must surely be considered as one of the best-known groups both nationally and internationally. Their haunting music, Kim Jong-wans soft but urgent singing, and certainly their elaborate lyrics have garnered them a legion of fans over the years.

One of the reasons for Nells continuing popularity might be their consistency. While the specific type of language Kim Jong-wan, lead singer and main songwriter, uses is diverse and expressive, there are a few themes that run through the whole of the bands discography.

This discography begins with the release of their first indie album Reflection of in 2001. In a way it is impressive that the songs they created back then could easily be recognized as Nell songs even by a listener who just recently got into their music.

One such example is the track 쓰레기 (Garbage), which already features the steady rhythmical pattern one so often hears in Nell songs. Another typical feature, the onset of a full-blown electric guitar sound about midway through the song can also be found. The lyrics tell the story of a speaker who has been left by their lover and cant cope with this new reality:

You left behind me (yes, so I was) the worthless me

You left behind me (yes, so I was) just some meaningless thing

Wish I could rest just as much as you hurt me

Wish it became as easy as you hurt me

About two years later, Nell released their first major studio album Let It Rain. The album, and its title song Stay, increased the bands popularity immensely. Yet this was not due to a significant change in sound or subject matter, but probably just because the band was finally introduced to a larger audience.

Another song from the album, 시작의 끝 (The End of the Beginning), shows this quite nicely. It also serves as a first example of Kim Jong-wans beautiful lyricism. With the extensive use of metaphors, the words elude a one-sided interpretation. The lyrics open themselves up to the meaning the listener wants to attach to themwhether it be the accusation of a former lover, a general lament over hardships in live, or something else:

It seems there is always misery behind beauty.

Flying towards that single light like insects,

even though you also ran into it for the sake of that something,

into despair youve never seen before.

Slowly working their way up the charts, Nells fourth album Separation Anxiety (2008) must surely be considered as one of their most commercially successful efforts. It also spawned one of their most popular songs, 기억을 걷는 시간 (Time Spent Walking Through Memories).

Compared to their other singles, 기억을 걷는 시간 is noteworthy for how calm it is. The song begins without drum accompaniment; and instead of the electric guitar onset described earlier, the climax of this song is emphasized by the addition of a piano melody. As so often, the lyrics are a kind of one-sided dialogue by the speaker directed towards a former lover. The speaker cannot accept their break-up and is haunted by memories of the couples time together:

Even today[,] I lived in the traces of you

I still see your figure

I still feel your warmth

Even today[,] I lived in the time of you

Separation Anxiety, ironically, would be the bands last album for a while, as members went to the army and came back. After they returned to the music scene in 2012, they began one of their most ambitious works: In many ways a staple in rock music, Nell released the first of three albums that would be conceptually linked over the next three years.

The album names Holding Onto Gravity (2012), Escaping Gravity (2013), and Newtons Apple (released about half a year ago) hint at a topical cohesion, yet this does not lead to Nell neglecting the subjects they have dealt with since the beginning of their career. The song Fantasy, off of their last album Newtons Apple, showcases this well; once again addressing the inability of the speaker to let go of the past:

The fantasy of believing that everything will get better in time

Always ends the same way

Even if you’re able to turn things around

You already know too many things

You can’t pretend that it never happened

While this article can only serve as a very rudimentary outline of Nells discography, it has hopefully succeeded in working out some of the major themes the band has sung about time and time again ever since the release of their first album 13 years ago. The importance of the past and memories, as well as the inability to let go of both, is central to Nells work. Often, this past involves a lover who has left the speaker. Additionally, the sadness over this loss, and the general ugliness of the world, often leads to an intense self-loathing of the speaker (occasionally going as far as contemplating suicide).

Although the band has also released uplifting songs, the main solace in Nells lyrics might lie in an acknowledgement of ones own painful experiences. In a world where the listener must often suppress negative feelings so as not to appear weak, it can be soothing to hear that ones emotions are utterly normal:

Just accept that sometimes, there is a sadness that can’t be erased.

2PM’s Wooyoung says, 'I think we should put a lot of deeper efforts into KPop's music side'

2PM’s Wooyoung was featured on Alpha Girls on Mnet.

He was the guest of TOKiMONSTA. On the show, he shared his thoughts on KPop. He said, "I think K-pop is so popular because of that title of being an idol. It’s not about music style. It’s about being an idol and giving a performance. I think we should put a lot of deeper efforts into the music side and to make it even more popular. We need to know what’s lacking and start over. Doing something new is pretty challenging. You should face those challenges while starting something new. Sometimes I wonder, ‘Why is [K-pop] so popular? The one thing that stands out to me, is that Korean idols work very hard. They work really hard to put on a great performance on stage.”

Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: 14-Year-Old Exo Fan Elena Braun Explains How South Korean Music Changed Her Life (Photo : Facebook)

NAME: Elena Braun

AGE: 14

HOME: Brookings, Ore.

CURRENTLY: "I have been delivering newspapers for four years for people around my neighborhood," Braun explains. "I am home-schooled online with Alpha Omega Academy which is a big temptation for me because I love going on Facebook to check out K-pop groups when I"m supposed to be doing homework."

INTRO TO K-POP: "When I discovered K-pop, I was thrilled," Braun said. "I loved how many of the groups focused on being cute, innocent, and fun. I also liked the fact that many of the K-pop groups had just a spot of sexiness without taking it too far, like many American pop artists. I had never seen group dancing in music videos and I thought it looked amazing. I have tried introducing my few friends to K-pop and many of them do not like it, which disappoints me greatly. I always show my friends the most amazing K-pop music videos by some of the most talented groups and they"re always upset that they can"t understand what they"re saying. When someone complains about this, I always tell them what CL from 2NE1 said, "even if you don"t understand the language, you can still love the music.""

FAN CREDENTIALS: Although she hasn"t had been able to see any K-pop artists live yet, last summer, Braun used a family trip to Portland, Ore. as an opportunity to stock up on her fan supplies. "We ate at a Korean restaurant named "Koreana,"" she recalled. "They had K-pop playing in the background. It was my first time hearing K-pop in public so I was very excited. After we finished eating, we went to a Korean store called H Mart and I had $50 to spend. I wish I could have stayed there for hours looking at everything from Korea but we had to leave after about an hour or so. I bought K-pop socks, Korean facemasks, Korean chopsticks, and a Korean keychain. It was an amazing experience because I saw many things that I have only seen in Korean dramas. I have always thought that some football fans were very peculiar because if their favorite team lost they would be really mad, or sometimes even cry. I now scold myself for judging them so easily."

WHAT MOST AMERICANS DON"T UNDERSTAND ABOUT K-POP: "That it"s okay for a guy to be fashionable!" Braun said. "One thing I love about K-pop is that the artists express themselves, not only through their music, but also through how they dress. Another thing I think a lot of people don"t understand is that K-pop idols are people too. In their music videos they look like perfect singing and dancing machines. Sometimes, when scandals or other things happen, people are shocked to think that they would do something like that. I think something a lot of people need to know is that they make mistakes, just like us."

FAVORITE GROUP: Exo

WHY EXO IS EXCELLENT: "In addition to being handsome, cute and sexy, they are also very talented," Braun said. "I also like the fact that they are funny. When I first got into K-pop, I thought that the only groups that existed were Big Bang, Super Junior, Girls" Generation and SHINee because they were all I could find on YouTube. As the K-pop fan grew inside of me, I discovered more and more groups thanks to websites like KpopStarz and fan pages on Facebook. When I discovered Exo, I felt like I had finally found my ultimate group. Their music can be so sad and sweet it would make me want to cry. Then, the next minute, it would make me feel like I was on top of the world, thanks to songs like "Growl" and "Wolf." Their music would make my mood go from sad to happy kind of like how gas makes car"s gas gauge go from empty to full. I also love how they include their fans in their slogan, "we are one. We are Exo!""

BEST EXO SONG: "Black Pearl"

"It gives me hope that I might have a chance with them, since one of the phrases in it says "international girl,"" she said.

FAVORITE FEMALE SOLO ARTIST: Ailee

"Ailee is amazing," Braun said. "When I discovered her I was in awe. Not only could she sing incredibly well, she"s beautiful. Ailee is more than just an artist I like, she"s my role model."

FAVORITE AILEE SONG: "I Will Show You"

FAVORITE MALE SOLO ARTIST: Henry Lau of Super Junior-M

"Henry Lau is so talented," she said. "I love his music! When he debuted as a solo artist, I knew I had to add him to my list. He can speak six different languages, play the violin and piano very well, dance and sing."

FAVORITE HENRY LAU SONG: "My Everything"

FAVORITE NEW ARTIST: Got7

"Got7 debuted a couple of weeks ago and I"ve noticed that they are already very popular," Braun said. "I think that they will definitely be a K-pop group to watch in 2014. I really like their concept and although I wasn"t a big fan of their debut, I have a feeling that this group is made for big things. Many people are comparing them to WINNER."

FUTURE PLANS: "I hope to be an English teacher in South Korea after I get my bachelor"s degree," she said. "I feel so much better now knowing that I have a bright future doing something that I know I"ll love--living in South Korea, teaching children, and listening to K-pop."
