Singer and actress IU plays an icy k-pop princess in the upcoming drama "The Producers." And while she is a singer in her own right, she says that she did not model the character on herself. There are a few other female k-pop idols that she carefully studied to create her character.
At the May 11 press conference for the "Producers" she spoke about her cool and composed character Cindy and the female idols that inspired her.
"Its awkward, but Ive been trying to follow after the idol group members who are nearby," she said.
She then named f(x)"s Krystal Jung, 4minute"s Hyuna and all the members of Girls Generation as her inspiration.
The character Cindy is described as an "ice princess" because she is aloof and keeps her feelings to herself. IU is not studying Krystal Jung, Hyuna or SNSD because she thinks they are icy and composed. IU wants to emulate their fashion savvy and performance style on stage rather than the way these singers act off stage. She thinks they are talented, attractive and fashionable.
"There are a lot of pretty people," said IU. "For example, I think Krystals skinny fit is really pretty, so Ive been wondering how I can pull off that kind of look."
She also said that she wants to borrow some of their charming on-stage mannerisms and expressions.
"Theyre not my friends, but Ive been trying to study the hand gestures, and expressions of singers like Hyuna and the SNSD members, who have so much charisma on the stage."
Studying fellow singers has made her admire their talent even more.
"Its so awkward when I wear killer-heels and try to dance with a charismatic expression on my face," said IU. "The things that Hyuna and I were born with are so different, but I am working really hard."
IU made her debut as a singer in 2008 and did not land an acting role until 2011. Her first role was playing Kim Pil Sook, a student at a performing arts school, in the drama "Dream High." Since then she has had two leading roles, playing Lee Soon Shin in "You"re The Best Lee Soon Shin" and Kim Bo Tong in "Pretty Man." She continues to record songs and perform. She released the EP "A Flower Bookmark" in 2013 and had her last concert in February 2015.
"The Producers," which stars Gong Hyo Jin, Cha tae Hyun, Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Jong Kook, begins on May 15.
A fashion magazine created by the international retail clothing company HM has cited Krystal and Jessica Jung as an international fashion influence. The company, which has stores in 55 countries wrote about Korean fashion in its Spring 2015 issue, saying that Korean trendsetters "influence the way people look, shop and live all over the world."
The article featured k-drama and k-pop celebrities such as BigBang"s G-Dragon, 2NE1"s CL, model Soo Joo Park, f(x) singer and "My Lovely Girl" actress Krystal Jung and her sister, former Girls Generation member and now BlanceEclare fashion brand founder Jessica Jung.
The article titled A Seoul Set talked about the fact that these stars are courted by designers such as Chanel to appear on the front rows of fashion shows. The article quoted Soo Young Cho, CEO of the fashion consultancy company "The Bread and Butter" on Krystal"s fashion appeal.
"Krystal has an eye for wearable fashion," she said in the article. "She looks great in her clothes, even if she"s just wearing jeans and a t-shirt.
The article also called Jessica Jung the k-pop version of Miranda Kerr and said that her girl-next-door style has made her a darling of the fashion paparazzi.
Increasingly international designers are recruiting K-drama stars and k-pop celebrities to attract attention to their fashion shows.
Jun Ji Hyun took part in the Autumn/Winter 2013 Christian Dior Haute Couture Fashion Show. She was the first Korean celebrity to be invited to the Christian Dior Haute Couture Fashion Show.
Girls Generation"s Tiffany and Sooyoung attended New York"s Fashion Week in February 2015. And Hyuna, CL and TTS attended the fashion week in the previous fall.
And the clothes worn at k-pop concerts and in dramas also inspire fashion and beauty trends. A shade of lipstick whether it is worn by Jun Ji Hyun in "You Who Came From The Stars" of actor Ji Sung playing a female personality in "Kill Me, Heal Me," can sell out before the drama ends.
According to Arirang TV, several of 2014"s popular fashion trends in Korea and abroad were inspired by the styles actresses wore in k-dramas.
When Jun Ji Hyun appeared in "You Who Came From The Stars" she popularized oversized coats, particularly checked ones, and her signature sunglasses. When Yoona appared in "The Prime Minister and I," she popularized shirts and dresses with oversized neck bows.
And IU"s quirky fun look in "Pretty Man" inspired a love of corsage necklaces and loose-fitting fuzzy sweaters.
As Korean dramas and k-pop expand their influence worldwide, it"s only natural that the effect on a fashion will be felt.

Berry Good's Seoyool Shares Jung Sisters (Jessica and Krystal) Is Her Role Model, Hope Sister AOA’s Yuna and She Can Be Great Like Them
Recently, Berry Good's Seoyool sat down for an interview to discuss her special sister bond with her older sister, AOA's Yuna!
Seoyool commented, “Yuna is not just my older sister but my sunbae who became a singer before me. [She] advised me to speak confidently and be proactive despite being a rookie.”
She continued, “She specifically emphasized greeting [etiquette], and said that [having good] character and good manners are the most important things.”
The Busan-bred sisters are five years apart and are very close despite Yuna leaving for Seoul to be a trainee when she was in middle school. Seoyool revealed, “My iPad is chock full of pictures of Yuna unni. I am [her] biggest fan.”
Member Taeha chimed in, “Seoyool really likes Yuna sunbae. She has Yuna fever.”
Seoyool said, “I want [me and Yuna] to be an exemplary celebrity sister pair like sunbaes Jessica and f(x)’s Krystal.”
Taeha added, “I hope that Yuna sunbae and Seoyool can become the ‘second Jessica-Krystal sisters.’’’
Meanwhile, Berry Good recently made a comeback with new single “Because of You,” which is composer Joo Tae Young’s (Fin.K.L’s “Forever Love,” So Chan Whee’s “Tears”) first song in 14 years after overcoming blood cancer.
Me! magazine recently featured an interview with former Girls Generation member Jessica Jung, who is now the creative director of her own fashion company BlancEclare.
The timing of Jessica"s departure from Girls Generation caused some controversy but she"s pleased with her company and open to new possibilities.
Those possibilities include singing. At the time of her departure from Girls Generation she did say she might work on a solo career. And in the Me! magazine interview, she also said she would consider working with her younger sister, Krystal Jung.
Krystal is a member of the girl group f(x) and also an up-and-coming actress. She recently played a leading role in the drama "My Lovely Girl" co-starring with singer-actor Rain and Infinite"s L.
When asked about the possibility of working with Krystal, Jessica seemed open to the idea.
""Everything has the possibility of happening in the future, I can"t be sure," said Jessica. "However, I"ll do things step by step, like when I first created the brand, I didn"t think about it too much because I liked sunglasses. I started drawing the sketches, then added on the frames and colors. After that, the brand started shaping up. So when the time is right, why not?"
The sisters are close and have worked together before. They collaborated on the program "Jessica and Krystal," in which they unveiled details about their real lives. For the show"s episodes they traveled together to Los Angeles and New York City.
One reason they did the show was to share more of their real personalities and correct some misperceptions that fans might have.
For example, Jessica was nicknamed "Ice Princess," but she wants viewers to know that she is not cold.
"I think I got that nickname because I was very shy during the early days of my debut," said Jessica. "But now I"ve become a lot more outgoing and extroverted."
Creating a fashion company was Jessica"s dream come true.
"I am excited to develop a fashion collection and introduce new items and style to the world," she wrote on Weibo at the time of her company launch. "Through creative work with other designers and fashion icons, I am learning a lot and I want to consistently share news of the partnership and collaboration that I have going on right now."
When asked about the source of her inspiration it was close to home.
"If I hadn"t entered the entertainment industry, I would already be an established fashion designer. I think I was influenced a lot growing up by my elegant mother," said Jessica. "I look up to my mother."

If a good opportunity arises, I don’t see any reason not to [collaborate with my sister].”
Jessica also shared her thoughts on being nicknamed Ice Princess, “I think I got that nickname because I was very shy during the early days of my debut. But now, I’ve become a lot more outgoing and extroverted.”
Finally, the singer, who is the founder and creative director of her own fashion line, revealed how she came to form an interest in fashion and becoming a designer, “I think I was influenced a lot growing up by my elegant mother. I look up to my mother.”
