[Recap] Weekly Roundup – July Week 4

All the important Korean Entertainment news from this week in one place: This is your Weekly Soompi Roundup!

Director Kim Jong Hak‘s death has been ruled as suicide by the authorities. He was the director of classic dramas such as “Sandglass,“ “Eyes of Dawn,” and “The Legend.” His most recent drama was “Faith.”  Se7en, Sanchu, and five other celebrity soldiers have been sentences to ten days or less in military jail. Enter obligatory “happy ending” joke here. The FTC ordered SM and the FFPCAI to stop interfering with JYJ and C-JeS which leads me to believe that Korea has an unhealthy obsession with acronyms.  The legal battles for Park Shi Hoo are completely over, just like our interest in this scandal

Shinyoo Hits 100 Weeks on Billboard

Your Grandma’s Favorite Idol: Shinyoo Hits 100 Weeks on Billboard

Stop and think for a minute. Do you remember where you were when “So Cool” became Sistar‘s first number one single? How about when Girls’ Generation brought “The Boys” back from Japan? Or when Psy uploaded the video to “Gangnam Style?” You probably have no idea. But if there exists one sure thing in this world, it’s that in each of those moments, sitting comfortably in the middle reaches of Korea’s music charts was a song called “Hands Of The Clock” by a man named Shinyoo. This marks the record’s 100th week on Billboard’s K-pop Hot 100 chart, logged at a respectable #26. Peaking previously at #23 and almost never falling out of the top 50, “Hands Of The Clock” is by far the longest-running song on the chart, making Shinyoo into some kind of unstoppable, mysterious musical force

There's something about pictures and Koreans that go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. In Korean culture, the act of taking pictures of yourself is called "selca." Selcas have taken our generation by storm and nobody, and I mean nobody is safe from its self-absorbed wrath! In simple terms, a selca is just when a person takes a photo of themselves from certain angles. The expressions can very from extremely adorable to I'm-too-sexy-for-my-shirt to look-at-me-I'm-prettier-than-you. Every one who thinks they are attractive takes a selca in Korea and some have even become famous through this act of photo-taking cockiness. But let's take a look at some of our favorite celebrity selcas and who wins for taking the cutest one!

K-pop Goes on Social Media: The Power of Likes, ReTweets and Shares

instagram, twitter, weibo, snsd, kara, shinee, fx, suju, 2am

How do Kpop idols benefit from participating in social media such as Instagram, Twitter, Weibo, Kakaotalk, so on and so forth? Is there a down side to it?

One thing that you have to realize is that K-pop's success is primarily built around album sales, track sales, concert sales, sales sales sales. Now what's an important compound in making sure these sales are on point? Two things, the internal help, that means the marketing, the staff, the company and the artists, and external, the fans.

As a fan, I can see where the need to get to know your favorite artists comes from. You don't just want talent, you want an amalgamation of talent and likability. And how can fans like the idols when there is no connection, no sort of platform for them to know for sure that the idol is just an instant message away
