Kwon Sang Woo"s new film "The Accidental Detective" is doing so well that there is talk of it becoming a series. And Kwon has already said that he is happy to play the character again.
The Korean media outlet Sports Donga reported that since the film"s release on September 24, it sold 2.1 million tickets. On the weekend, in which Korea celebrates the Thanksgiving holiday Chuseok, the number of tickets sold even beat the historical drama "The Throne," starring Yoo Ah In, Song Kang Ho and Moon Geun Young.
Kwon may have summed up the reason for his comedy"s success in an interview with the Korea Times.
"Holidays should be fun," said Kwon. "Why would the family gather around to watch something depressing or serious."
And "The Accidental Detective" is funny. Kwon Sang Woo plays Kang Dae Man, a comic book shop owner, who wants to be a detective but can"t pass the physical.
Frustrated by his ability to achieve his dream, he still feels called upon to offer advice to detectives. Things turn serious when he gets involved in a murder case because he believes that his friend has been framed.
"The Accidental Detective" is a movie about detectives and being a dad. The popular actor knows all about balancing a career and fatherhood. He has two children with his wife, actress and former MIss Korea Son Tae Young. Kwon said that much of his film role reflected his daily reality.
"As a father of two myself, I couldn"t think of any other actor my age who could do a better job than I could," said Kwon.
He said he did not get the usual jitters filming the movie. Much of his role came so naturally to him.
"Sometimes I play the role of a typical father," he said. "Feeding a toddler and changing diapers is second nature to me."
It was a dad-centric production. Between them, Kwon, co-star Sung Dong Il and the film"s director Kim Joung Hoon, have seven children.
Whatever happens after the first film, Kwon Sang Woo wants in.
"I want to be part of the sequel," he said.
"The Accidental Detective" is Kwon"s first comedy since 2006. His recent dramas include the melodramas "Queen of Ambition" and "Temptation and the medical drama "Medical Top Team."

Kwon Sang Woo explained, "I was once next to Jung Joon Ha when he were given a decision from Yoo Jae Suk asking him to do Infinity Challenge together. After he hung up, I said, ′What the heck are you doing?′ In a way, Jung Joon Ha entering Infinity Challenge is because of the me," drawing laughter.

As a father of two he said it was easy to play a married detective.
"If I filmed this movie before I got married it wouldn"t have been as much fun. Knowing what it was like to take care of a child made it more fun for me to act as a father and it was almost like reality. I like the movie because you can see the "father" in me and I think my wife will enjoy it too."
Kwon and Song married in 2008. The next year they had their first child, a son. This year, they had their second child, a daughter. Both the marriage and their careers seem to be going strong.
"I think I am a good husband and father," said Kwon. "My wife doesn"t let me go into the kitchen but I still try to help with the dishes if I can."
In the film Kwon has to massage the shoulders of his onscreen wife, played by Seo Young Hee. Does he do that for his real-life wife?
"Of course I do. I do my best," he said.
The actor also said that he feels as if he and Son Tae Young are still on their honeymoon. When asked to rate her he said he had more points to give her than he can ever express.
"I can give her 200 out of 100 points."
In "The Accidental Detective" he plays Kang Dae Man, a comic book caf owner and blogger who is obsessed with mysteries. Kang wants to become a policeman but can"t quite pass the physical. Since he can"t officially join the force, he decides to help them out by offering some unwanted advice. Things get personal when a friend is accused of murder and Kang Dae Man thinks he has been framed.
But playing a dad was the best part of the film for him.
Kwon Sang Woo"s most recent drama was "Temptation" with Choi Ji Woo and Park Ha Sun. He also appeared in the film "Chinese Zodiac." He was recently cast in the mystery film "The Detective." In that film he will play a library owner obsessed with mystery fiction.
Former Miss Korea contestant Son Tae Young appeared in the weekend drama "You"re The Best Lee Soon Shin" and the docudrama "Into The Flames." She had a role in the 2014 Chinese romantic comedy film "Love War" and hosted "Son Tae Young"s W Show."
