5 Things I LOVED in K-pop: 9/17 – 9/23

If you are a fan of a certain idol group coming to the US, this past week in K-pop consisted of only one thing: the announcement of tickets sales and the ensuing melee between fans to get those tickets this past Saturday.  Seriously, I think most Big Bang fans could hardly think the whole week until they tried their luck and got their tickets on Saturday.  It was disheartening to hear of those that didn’t and of the creeps who were reselling them at outrageous prices, but that’s a rant for another post

Orange Caramel’s ‘Lipstick’ official music video + MV review

With their first album ‘Lipstick‘, the chic, yet tastefully tacky trio, Orange Caramel, mark their transition from just an After School sub-unit to a proper musical act. At one point Orange Caramel was the first of its kind, so it’s no wonder Pledis played it safe by cautiously releasing singles one at a time. I’m a big fan of their infectious tunes, but even I’m willing to admit I didn’t expect them to get this far. The best thing about Orange Caramel is that with every release, they’ve been able to fuse all kinds of unexpected musical styles with their cartoonish, trot-inspired approach to K-pop

It wouldn’t be Chuseok without gift sets

Market shelves stocked with all imaginable gift sets, from Spam to hanwoo, or Korean homegrown cattle, are a tell-tale sign that a holiday is approaching. The holiday scene in Korea was pretty much the same back in the 1960s, with the major difference being that the most sought-after gift four decades ago was a sack of sugar. A six-kilogram (13-pound) package of sugar manufactured by CheilJedang (now CJ CheilJedang) was priced at 780 won (70 cents) and a 30-kilogram package at 3,900 won. Sugar is no longer a pricey item, but it used to be a coveted gift, according to the Museum of Commerce operated by Shinsegae Department Store
