MBC Gayo Daejun 2013: The Dark Horse That Slayed Everyone

MBC Gayo Daejun 2013: The Dark Horse That Slayed Everyone

MBC Gayo Daejun 2013: The Dark Horse That Slayed Everyone MBC Gayo Daejun 2013: The Dark Horse That Slayed Everyone MBC Gayo Daejun 2013: The Dark Horse That Slayed Everyone The 2013 Gayo season has finally come to an end! From past viewings, the SBS Gayo Daejun has always been the flashy favorite, KBS’s rendition wouldve been the one everyone hated on (but still watched), and MBC wouldve hummed along with their low-key showing. At first glance, 2013 appeared to be no different—but then MBC came and ran a fabulously produced program from start to finish. Camerawork and stage arrangements were clean, and even though they werent the most flamboyant or imaginative, the music festival was free of technical problemsthe overall experience was utterly satisfying. To top it off, the performers decided to rock the K-pop world that night, and have an absolute blast while doing itwhat a novel concept!

The MBC Gayo was a visual delight, a hands-down winner of the year. I loved the integration of the pre-recorded content with the live show; Crayon Pop’s “Bar Bar Bar” had never looked like such a hoot! I had difficulty warming up to the song when it first caught steam, but this gayo version finally hit the right notes with me. “Bar Bar Bar” is a song meant to be performed en-masse, and having tons of people participating in a flash mob in front of the MBC building was the perfect performance experience.

The special stages were a bit of a let down: the A Pink/B1A4 one was cute (but a tad flat), Key/Tiffany were awkward both on the duet front and the song front (I liked Keynot so much Tiffany), SM Towns Like a G6 didnt quite work (but at least they were energetic), and Ailee/Niel didnt mesh well with each other. Call me old-fashioned, but the best special stage of the night were the trot stages. I LOVED them, especially Tae Jin-ah. It’s great to see Korean popular music in its most traditional form, and I’m not going to lie, Park Hyun-bins “샤방샤방” is like my favorite song ever.

Another special stage I really liked was the one in which K.WillB and Lim Chang-jung performed Please Call Me Oppa:

Sistar did a decent job with their performance. Barring the slight remix of Give It to Me, their stage didnt show much variation from their regular stages. Although Hyorins intro really highlighted her vocals, I listened to it wishing she would move on from her Beyoncé tropes.

Beast was dynamic as usual, but Hyunseung stole the night for me. (Thank you Trouble Maker for giving him stage presence!)

T-ara tends to be underwhelming for me, but I really liked them here. For once they actually looked like they were enjoying being on stage and performing a jammin’ combo of No.9 along with their follow-up tune, “Do You Know Me?.” In the same vein, After School totally jazzed up “First Love,” and it worked impeccably for them.

Out of the three collaborations that Hyori did, this one probably stands in the middle. The one with Dynamic Duo was really boring, the CL one fit her flashy style and had bad camerawork (like the entire SBS Gayo), but this one was sorta flat. I think that the concept was a good one, and I love Yoon Mi-rae, but she and the rest of MFBTY dont have the kind of flamboyance that pairs well with Hyori.

While the Kara comments from the MCs were not the smartest thing said that night, I did enjoy the groups medley. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t go through the whole thing as a full group, but whats worse is that the whole endeavor, the Kara Special, felt half-hearted.

The original “Hush” is a very subdued song, and probably a hard song to remix without essentially re-composing the song altogether. This version kicked the song up a couple of notches, without losing the original grace of Hush, but it was evidently lacking some bass. Nevertheless, Miss A, why couldnt you have performed this version all along?

B1A4. Killed. It. I liked this version so much more than the original, because the instrumentation unified all the independent elements that felt haphazard before. In fact, it almost seemed like Whats Happening shouldve been a rock song, and B1A4 how to perform the heck out of it.

Exo finally sang (the good part of) “Wolf” live. Too bad it looks like they then lip-synched “Growl.”

Ive always been a fan of 2PMs Game Over from Grown, and Im really happy that they performed it here. I wouldve liked to have seen the live chorus and orchestra from the SBS Gayo show up here, because then this performance wouldve really been epic.

Shinees stage wouldve been totally predictable, if not for the great piano version of Dream Girl they performed with Henry. That being said, I have to confess that this is my favorite performance of Everybody, in terms of voice to backtrack ratio. (Okay, okay, I liked the scientists!)

All in all, the magic behind the MBC Gayo was the infective energy of the whole event. Four hours totally flew by as long as you skipped all the MC sections. Performers were constantly moving around the stage and connecting with the audience AND the camera. I loved how it created an inclusive environment, such that you (out in cyberspace) felt like part of the audience, even at 2am. (Yes, thats when I watched this.) When everyone is enjoying themselves so much, it really isn’t hard to have a good time.

Thanks MBC, for making gayos fun again.

So readers, what did you think of the 2013 Gayo season and how was the MBC Gayo Daejun in particular? Which stages did you like, and was there anything that I left out? Comment away!

Reply 1994s Haitai (Son Ho Joon) made an appearance at T-aras Do You Know Me.

An SM special stage featured Key and Tiffany performing Bang Bang, followed by Key, Amber Kris and Chanyeol doing Like a G6.

One of the most talked about stages of the night was the collaboration between Hyori and MFBTY (Tiger  JK, Yoon Mi Rae , Bizzy). They had an amazing set together, performing Miss Korea, The Cure, U Go Girl, and Monster.

Kara also had a sadly nostalgic stage, performing many of their past songs. This may be one of the last times we get to see them as five members.

2013 SBS Gayo Daejun Amazing Line-Up, Awesome Collaborations

2013 SBS Gayo Daejun Amazing Line-Up, Awesome Collaborations

‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’ Amazing Line-Up, Awesome Collaborations "Music can create miracles" was the concept for the past year's hottest artists. The event was hosted by singers Sung Shi Kyung, 2NE1's Dara, and Super Junior's Heechul. The event featured a brilliant line-up of singers who captured the eyes, ears, and hearts of the audience. Singers not only performed their own hits of 2013, but also collaborated with other singers to perform them on stage. The last performance included all the singers coming together to offer up a heartwarming performance of "You Are a Miracle."

Even before the show went live, the event was a hot topic because of its extraordinary line-up. The first performance featured 25 idol group members singing a winter song. Next were some rookies that really shined in 2013, including BTS, Ladies' Code, VIXX, Crayon Pop, Hello Venus, and others. Crayon Pop's five-cylinder dance even had the audience jumping.

Jo Yong Pil also made an appearance through a video message to encourage the artists. Ailee showed off her powerful vocals. This year's show highlighted not only individual singers and groups, but also their collaborative performances. Yoon Jong Shin sang his song "Instinctively," which made the viewers forget just for a moment that he's usually so silly in front of the camera. Lim Kim danced to Park Ji Yoon's "Coming of Age," and showed a brand new side to her. Park Ji Yoon then joined San E on stage to sing "Mystery" together.

SBS' "K-Pop Star" season 1 participants Baek Ah Yeon and Park Ji Min sang each other's songs. Girl's Day and A Pink performed each other's songs. Although they might seem similar, they do have different charms. Girl's Day sang A Pink's "Nonono," and A Pink sang Girl's Day's "Expect," showing off the suspender dance.

ZE:A members came together to perform as a group. ZE:A and Nine Muses sang Jo Yong Pil's "Bounce" in a club-style song, putting a new twist to the song. Girls' Generation and EXO members sang Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" in a jazz swing style. EXO members played the drums and piano, to act as the band. They even danced together.

Lim Chang Jung and Huh Gak put forth their best singing voices for the comical "Open the Door."

Secret, Teen Top, Rainbow, and Park Jin Young finished up part 1 of the show. Teen Top's Niel sang "Love Fool," A Pink's Eunji sang "She Was Pretty," Infinite's Hoya sang "I Have a Girl," and Secret's Hyosung sang "Honey," all the while dancing with a hologram of the original performer of the songs, Park Jin Young. Park Jin Young then came forth from the hologram and joined them in singing "You're the One" and 2PM's "Hand's Up."

Part 2 was opened by EXO with a remix of their hit song "Growl." Just like the million sellers they are, EXO put on an extraordinary performance, in which every single dance move was met with squeals of joy from the viewers. SISTAR then took the stage with their sexy dance and matching sexy attire. They were followed by other shining stars of 2013, including miss A, 4MINUTE, IU, Brown Eyed Girls, K.Will, f(x), Lee Hi, Block B, B.A.P, B1A4, T-ARA, Infinite, 2NE1, Beast, CNBLUE, and KARA.

We can't forget about the hip hop collaborations as well. Dynamic Duo and Baechigi joined forces to showcase exciting rap. They were followed by Bumkey, San E, and Verbal Jint who showed their hip hop harmony. Yoon Mi Rae, Drunken Tiger, and Bizzy sang "The Cure" together. Eun Ji Won, Block B's Zico, BTS' Rap Monster, B1A4's Baro, and B.A.P's Yongguk joined in on the idols' hip hop performances as well.

Lee Seung Chul joined SHINee's Onew, BEAST's Hyunseung, INFINITE's Woohyun, and B1A4's Sandeul to sing "My Love." Another highlight was Lee Hyori and CL's collaborative performance of "Bad Girls" and "The Baddest Female." CL's powerful rap and Lee Hyori's craziness put forth an intense performance. For their last song the two appeared on stage wearing fur and showed off a powerful dance.

2PM brought back the oldie "Heartbeat" and also performed "A.D.T.O.Y." SHINee performed "Everybody" and "Dream Girl" on stage and challenged the other male groups. Big Bang's Taeyang and G-Dragon, while they didn't perform as a complete group, showed off their collaboration. They had moments were they sat together on stage and sang, and then other moments where they danced and moved about the stage. They really know how to work together and enjoy themselves on stage. They concluded their performance with a heartwarming hug.

Girls' Generation sang "Express 999" and "I Got a Boy." Yoona wasn't able to make the show because of a drama shoot, but the performance was excellent, nonetheless. The last performance of the night was given by all the participants singing "You Are a Miracle." They plan to donate all proceeds from the song. SHINee's Taemin, 2PM's Wooyoung, A Pink's Naeun, Girl's Day's Minah displayed a parody of the dramas "The Heirs" and "The Master's Sun." The 4-plus-hour show came to an end with "You Are a Miracle."

'2013 SBS Gayo Daejun' featured brilliant performances and collaborative stages among the hottest stars of the year. It was an especially nice gift for those viewers who weren't able to attend a holiday concert this year. It's hard to see such collaborations elsewhere, and was one entertaining night for viewers. We can't wait for next year's show! Whose performance was your favorite?

Best and Worst of 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun

Best and Worst of 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’ There were 34 groups and individuals totaling to 125 superstars performing on "2013 SBS Gayo Daejun" which aired on December 29th. It included rookies such as VIXX, BTS, and Ladies' Code as well as established big names such as Girls' Generation, Big Bang, 2PM, and EXO. Yoon Jong Shin, Park Ji Yoon, and Lim Kim represented record label Mystic89, while veterans such as Tiger JK, Lim Chang Jung, Verbal Jint, Lee Seung Chul, Lee Hyori and Park Jin Young brought excitement and nostalgia. 15's Park Ji Min teamed with fellow K-Pop Star debutee Baek A-Yeon for a duet performance to remember. It was an amazing show, but it certainly had its up and downs.

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

One of the best moments of the show was the music drama "Miracle". The protagonists were 2PM's Wooyoung, SHINee Taemin, A-Pink Naeun, and Girl's Day Minah. Almost every idol star made a cameo appearance. Some of the parts were just terribly bad because of the bad acting, but the overall content of the drama made up for the lack of acting prowess of some of the stars. It was parody that combined popular SBS dramas "The Heirs" and "The Master's Sun". The popular lines of those dramas were reenacted by idol stars, and some of the singers who doubled as actors in the dramas returned to play those roles again. EXO, VIXX, and K-Will's acting was also a very fun surprise. It had a lot of meaning in that it was a content exclusive to the show.

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

Nine Muses's reinterpretation of Jo Yong Pil's "Bounce" was also very refreshing. The stage was a collaboration between Nine Muses and ZE:A, their label mates. The music was remixed to a trance/club beat, but the fun beat of the original song remained and made for a memorable performance. It was "classic Nine Muses" in that the stage was sexy without being overly so. Nine Muses also shined while singing with veteran singer Lee Seung Chul with his song "Come Closer".

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

Hip Hop collaborations was another bright spot int he show. Baechigi and Dynamic Duo put on a show with a perfect collaboration stage, and Verbal Jint and Bumpkey didn't disappoint with a followup stage with the song "Play With It". San-E rapped with rhymes that summarized the year in Kpop by mentioning EXO's "Growl", 2NE1's "Missing You", and TOP's "Doom Dada". Their stage ended with a unique remix of "Just the Two of Us". Tiger JK, Yoon Mi Rae, Bizzy, and Eun Ji Won also had a collaboration stage with Block-B's Zico, B.A.P's Bang Yong Guk, B1A4's Baro, and BTS's Rap Monster. It was an interesting mix of the old and new guard of hip hop.

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

Speaking of old guard and new guard, Lee Hyori and CL's stage was something else entirely. Lee Hyori sang her hit song "Miss Korea" as an acoustic song and featured all 30 Miss Korea contestants. CL then came onto the stage, and they sang "Bad Girl" and "The Baddest Female" together. CL's wild rapping and Lee Hyori's sexy performances made the stage an absolute pleasure to behold.

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

What about the worst? One of the lowest points of the show was the opening stage. IT was supposed to be a fun collaboration between 25 idol group members, but it was just terribly awkward. It was a true all-star lineup with SHINee Minho, SHINEee Taemin, 2PM Junho, 2PM Nichkhun, BEAST Yo-Seob, BEAST Doo-Joon,Infinite L, Infinite Woohyun, B1A4 Sandeul, B1A4 Jin Young, EXO D.O, EXO Baekhyun, K-Will, Kara Gyuri, 4MINUTE Hyuna, 4MINUTE Ga-yoon, f(x) Luna, f(x) Victoria, SECRET Sunhwa, SECRET Hyosung, Miss A Suzy, Miss A Jia, Rainbow Jaekyung, Girl's Day Mina, and A-Pink Eunji. However, from the beginning of Eunji's part the sound started to fade in and out. Because of this, Suzy was unable to come into the song at the right beat. Everything unravelled from there. Also, the camera director was unable to focus in on the person that is singing, instead opting to show how many people are on the stage.

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

The technical woes that plagued the opening stage continued throughout the show. Crayon Pop's music literally echoed for a good while during their performance. Park Jin Young had to alter his entire choreography to /compensate for the broken stage lift. Girls' Generation's leader, Taeyeon, seem to continually fiddle with her in-ear monitor while singing "Express 999". Not only that, but the camera failed on multiple occasions to grab the amazing performances put on by the groups, instead opting to show the audience or the stage from afar.

Best and Worst of ‘2013 SBS Gayo Daejun’

The all-in-all greatest moment came as Crayon Pop was singing their megahit "Bar Bar Bar". When they started to perform with the '5-cylinder Engine Dance', the fans behind them began to dance along with them, standing up and sitting down with Crayon Pop - only these were not Crayon Pop's fans but fans of EXO, VIXX and BEAST. It was a clear reminder that music creates space for festivity without adherence to a particular group.

G-Dragon and Lee Hyori Express Displeasure With the Camerawork at the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun

G-Dragon and Lee Hyori Express Displeasure With the Camerawork at the 2013 SBS Gayo DaejunFollowing the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun, Big Bang’s G-Dragon and Lee Hyori indirectly expressed their displeasure at the camera work for the show. On his Twitter, G-Dragon posted a short status, “Ca…me…ra” On Lee Hyori’s Twitter also, after thanking her fellow guests on the show and her collab partner CL, she said, “And the camera, um…  …thanks.”

With the appearance of so many singers, as well as many performances including various collaboration stages that aren’t often seen on the end-of-the-year music shows, the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun had the attention of a lot of people. However, in terms of the camera work, the show left a lot to be desired.

Following their posts, the situation escalated, and even viewers of the show posted on their Twitters and various social media sites that it was a shame about the camera work, showing shots of the ground or open air, that if they had taken just a little more care, it was a preventable problem, and that they could’ve watched a better show if not for the camera work, etc.

Upon seeing the increase in complaints, Lee Hyori soon deleted her Twitter post, and explained, Now that I think about it, the Gayo Daejun was roughly 4 hours of performances, with nearly 100 singers hitting the stage with countless remixes. It must’ve been really hard for the camera director, too. This wasn’t the fault of the cameras.

Did you watch the show? What did you think of the camera work?

2013 SBS Gayo Daejun Music Drama Recap: Same Characters, Different StyleWho else burst out laughing when they saw K.Will s face revealed as Choi Young Do during Part 1 of the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun Music Drama, The Miracle? I love K.Will, but that was so unexpected. I think he pulled off Kim Woo Bins character from The Heirs very well, with the same attitude and toughness, if not a bit awkward.

The SBS Gayo Daejun unveiled the three part music drama, The Miracle yesterday featuring SHINees Taemin, Girls Days Minah, A Pinks Son Na Eun, 2PMs Wooyoung, and many other idols. With cameos from Shin Dong Yup, Kim Kwang Kyu, and Seo In Guk, the music drama parodied and blended together two hit SBS dramas: The Heirs and Masters Sun. Taemin played Lee Min Hos Kim Tan from The Heirs, while Minah played Park Shin Hyes Cha Eun Sang. Son Na Eun played Gong Hyo Jins Tae Gong Shil from Masters Sun and Wooyoung played So Ji Subs Joo Joong Won.

In the music drama, Tae Gong Shil gets the requests from ghosts to find a way to warm the hearts of everyone in the world. With the help of Kang Woo (Seo In Guk) who introduces her to Kim Tan, Son Na Eun is able get the help of Cha Eun Sang. Cha Eun Sang asks the question on her social network account, When do peoples hearts become warm? This question spreads online and various characters and idols answer in different ways that music warms their hearts. Kim Tan, Cha Eun Sang, Joo Joong Won, and Tae Gong Shil recruit the help of famous composer Kim Hyung Suk, as well as the help of Yoon Chan Young (Kang Min Hyuks character from The Heirs) and Lee Bo Na (Krystals character from the same drama) to form the You Make Miracle-2013 Friendship Project

Kim Tan, Cha Eun Sang, Joo Joong Won, and Tae Gong Shil start going around to various artists to request their help, but the busy stars are hestistant to participate. The friendship project is not looking good until one by one, the idols started walking into the recording studio. Success! The You Make Miracle-2013 Friendship Project brings together the best artists of K-Pop to sing the song that will warm the hearts of people all over the world.

Watch the full music drama and music video below. What do you think of K.Will, Taemin, Son Na Eun, Minah, and Wooyoungs parody of their respective characters?

So, what do you think of K.Will, Taemin, Son Na Eun, Minah, and Wooyoungs parody of their respective characters? My vote goes to K.Will and his perfectly waxed-stiff hair.

[Live Blog] 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun: Redefining the Meaning of Extravagance

A Star-Studded Affair: 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun

A Star-Studded Affair: 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun

A Star-Studded Affair: 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun A Star-Studded Affair: 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun A Star-Studded Affair: 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun This year the SBS Gayo Daejun was quite an event, tons of fun collaborations and great performances from rookies and veterans alike.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the show is getting to see a bit more creativity when it comes to the set-up. When artists go on music shows, unless it’s the first show of a promotion, it’s usually very much the standard of performing the song the same show after show. This allowed the groups (or at least, the people in charge of the groups) to have a bit more creative leeway.

I wasn’t too thrilled with the opening act. I wanted to be, but I ended up getting a bit bored with the performance and finding it a bit forced. That being said, while the whole show was enjoyable, some stages left a bit to be desired, while others really hit it out of the part with theme, dance, and overall energy. One annoying part however was that, for many performances, the back track was either too loud, or the groups were simply out of synch with the music. The surprising bonus of the technical difficulties, however, is that you really get a chance to judge the vocals of many groups and can pin point the members that are simply “visuals.” If you’re off on your track after all, we can only hear your voice without the help.

Here are some of my personal highlights from the show:

BTS came out with a bang and I found their performance to be one of the better ones. I wasn’t too familiar with the group, but I will certainly be keeping an eye on them after seeing this performance.

Of course, Crayon Pop came out with a bang. Their performances are always fun, and it was great to see the audience members taking part in their choreography. However, they were one of the most obvious groups affected by the back track issues mentioned earlier.

Girl’s DayA-Pink had an interesting stage that involved a swap of the songs most popular for each of the groups during the year. It was quite nice to see as the songs chosen had polar opposite concepts. A-Pink did sound a bit messier than Girl’s Day when it came to Expectation, but each group was best at their own songs.

While Block B wasn’t one of my favorite performances for the night, I feel compelled to mention them for their styling choice: very 80s rock and very fun.

Hyorin was another idol that performed a great act. The rock twist added more “umph” to an otherwise normal, Sistar-eqsue sone. It was, of course, perform beautifully.

I really, really wanted to like SNSD TaeTiSeo’s performance. It started out well, with the retro twist done on “Crazy in Love,” not to mention the wonderful outfits, but when it came to the girls singing together, it wasn’t as cohesive as it could of been. Some times the girls were out of synch, or were simply over powering one another.

4Minute gave us a great performance and a great stage to boot. With the intro being a remix of their past hits, and even including the zombies from the “What’s your Name” MV, it was fun to watch from beginning to end. And it’s always good to see the girls together since, at times, it’s simply the Hyuna Show.

Drunken Tiger, Yoo Mi-rae, and Bizzy, like always, had an amazing performance from start to finish. The act went through four songs and included Eun Jiwon, Zico, Rap Monster, and Bang Yong-guk in their performance.

Lee Hyori and CL were the duo to beat this year. Starting off with Lee Hyori’s “Miss Korea” (and the very lovely stage including Korean females of all ages from all over the country) and easing into “Bad Girls,” CL and Lee Hyori blended the songs perfectly. The energy they exuded in this performance left the entire audience cheering for more and was one of my favorite, if not my number one, performance of the night.

Wrapping up the group performances was none other than SNSD. They started off with Express 999 and it wasn’t their best. Some of the girls were a bit off-key and it was another case of some girls overpowering the others. But they redeemed themselves with a lively performance of “I Got a Boy” (as long as you can make it through the opening rap).

Which stages were your favorites? Any I failed to mention that caught your eye?
