My Two Cents – YG Entertainment: Too Little Too Late and Too Much Too Soon With Latest Announcements
yg entertainment, 2ne1, big bang, psy, lee hi, akdong musicianYG Entertainment Brands
In this op-ed, let's play devil's advocate and raise the questions on everyone's minds about YG Entertainment's latest slew of announcements ofcomebacks, debuts, and competitive reality shows. Why is YG doing too much? What goals are they trying to reach? What numbers are they trying to hit? Those are the questions, at least this writer thinks. There could be more.
In the middle of June 2013, what seems to be 2NE1's long overdue comeback wasannounced by YG entertainment. Initially planned, for 2012, or was it 2011, YGonce again set expectations that 2NE1 will finally come back this year, via astaggered concept, with tracks releasing beginning in July through October. Theculmination of which will be a full album, or is it a mini-album? It's reallyhard to tell at this point
cl, 2ne1, the baddest femalecl
On account of CL going solo to promote the "Baddest Female", her self-proclaimed image and single, her baddest moves and rhymes seem to win votes as she wins on Inkigayo for her debut stage, this June 9 2013, easily beating Lee Hyori and BEAST. I suppose it was one bad girl against the other since both female competitors on the music show were promoting bad female personas. But of course, "Not bad as in bad, but bad as in good, you know?" Has anyone else gotten over that?
In any case, comeback stages were a flurry on the Inkigayo program. CL was able to join the likes of MBLAQ, Rainbow, and SM Entertainment new solo artist Henry was also present to perform his new single "Trap", along with similar company artists SHINee's Taemin and Suju's Cho Kyuhyun.
CL also participated in an interview between performances, happily wishing luck for herself and promotions and thanking everyone who sent their support her way during her solo debut
Big Bang, 2NE1, yg entertainmentYG: 2012 About Big Bang, 2013 About 2NE1
For YG Entertainment, 2012 was certainly about promoting Big Bang, putting out back-to-back songs with combinations of G-Dragon as a solo and the team as a whole. This year, YG seems to be employing a similar strategy. This time, YG is going all in on 2NE1.
Similar to how Big Bang paved the way for G-Dragon last year, CL is leading 2NE1 back to the land of K-pop with the release of her solo debut album, soon to be followed by 2NE1's comeback with a new song in June. Only time will tell whether the similar tactic will work out for two years in a row or not, but it will probably be successful. Why? Simply because it is 2NE1 we are talking about.
With CL having prepared the stage with her solo debut of THE BADDEST FEMALE, 2NE1 is reported to have pulled up their comeback date from July to June
Blackjacks, rejoice. After 10 months of strange collaborations and false starts, it looks like 2013 will be 2NE1‘s year after all.
First up, leader CL is set drop her solo debut on May 28th. Word is that she’s already completed MV filming, and that both Producer Teddy and Yang Hyun-suk himself are heading the project, so absolutely no delay excuses come CL-Day. The MV was also directed by Seo Hyun-seung of “I Am the Best” and “I Love You” fame, so we’re guaranteed an intense visual experience. Not much word on the song’s style other than it will show off CL’s various “charms,” which probably means superb rapping and lots of sassy winking
Everybody’s coming back or in the process of coming back! We’ve got 2PM, Shinhwa, Hyori, a CL solo, a 4th anniversary 2NE1 comeback, Vixx, Exo, and maybe a thousand more.
Here’s a compilation of some images and videos:
Which one are you looking forward to most?
