Ninety-three beaches along the east coast of Gangwon Province are opening their doors to welcome holidaymakers this summer.
Donghae opened six beaches in the city on Wednesday including Mangsang Beach. Gangneung, Sokcho, and Yangyang will open their beaches on Friday, and Samcheok and Goseong on July 14. They aim to attract 30 million visitors, up 5 million from last year, and will stay open until Aug. 20.
Various events are planned to entertain holidaymakers visiting the region. Beach volleyball and soccer competitions will take place in Mangsang Beach from July 21, and a rock festival on July 30.
At Gyeongpo Beach in Gangneung, a week-long festival will feature music concerts and dance parties from July 21 through Aug. 6. And an airshow by Black Eagles, an aerobatic team of the Air Force, is scheduled for Aug. 13 and 14.
For the convenience of visitors, Goseong planted a variety of plants that repel mosquitoes, such as daisies and lemongrass, along 27 beaches in the region. Gangneung will operate a drone rescue team, employing drones to observe swells and detect anyone drowning at sea.
