[Review][Single] T-ara N4 “Countryside Life”
There are a lot of strange things happening in T-ara N4‘s debut single, “Countryside Life“. To start with, some thought T-ara would pull a 2PM and hang out in Japan for at least a year while the scandal died down before attempting a Korean comeback. And as for the members of the subunit, Eunjung, Hyomin, and Jiyeon were the three at the center of last year’s alleged bullying controversy, and Areum is a new member who isn’t popular yet. Their “hip-hop” concept will unavoidably draw comparison’s to Girls’ Generation‘s “I Got a Boy” and puts T-ara N4 in direct competition with 4minute‘s current promotions for “What’s Your Name?“
[Review][Single] SECRET “YooHoo”
SECRET may not have the most thought-provoking music, but that’s never stopped them from landing in the top 10 since their first physical single, “Magic“. So what is their secret? Although concept changes are almost as common as girl group debuts in K-pop, SECRET‘s ability to naturally go from a next-door-girl image to a sexy, powerful stage is unrivaled among their scantily clad peers. SECRET‘s new single “YooHoo” brings us another costume change for the girls that takes us back to their cheery “Shy Boy” era but with a spring inspired flare
[Review] SHINee ‘Why So Serious? ? The Misconceptions of Me’ – Part II
Nobody wants to be labeled a copycat or be pigeonholed. For most K-Pop acts, this means finding the right balance between borrowing from existing trends and and adapting it to fit their style- like how BTOB and B.A.P took last year’s 90′s trend and adapted it to their comebacks with “WOW” and “Stop It“, respectively. For other acts, it means reinvention- such as Sunggyu taking on some very un-INFINITE styles with his solo album ‘Another Me‘, or 2YOON blending country and K-Pop with “24/7“
[Review] 4minute ‘Name is 4minute’
After some moderately successful or unsuccessful attempts—depending on your personal opinion—with derivative solo artist and subunit releases, 4minute has finally become cohesive again, releasing their mini-album ‘Name is 4minute‘. While at first, I must admit I was somewhat dumbfounded by the concept the group took upon themselves. Luckily, as the mini-album continued to play, this poor start gave way to perhaps the strongest overall release by the power group 4minute. I have very mixed opinions about the first track “What’s Your Name?“, and unfortunately they predominately are tinged with negativity
[Pre-Release Review][Single] M.I.B “Nod Along!”
[Editor's Note: "Nod Along!" was provided to allkpop for review by Jungle Entertainment before its official release to the public] M.I.B has suffered something of an identity crisis over the year since their debut, awkwardly straddling the line between hip-hop artists and manufactured idols in a way that hasn’t quite resonated with the public yet. Coming out of Jungle Entertainment’s impressive roster of artists (Tiger JK, Yoon Mi Rae, Bizzy, Leessang, and others), any new artist has a high bar to clear if they want to meet listener expectations in both artistry and skill
