Adventures With Jenny: touchdown in Korea and Getting Lost in Gangnam (Part I)

Adventures With Jenny: Landing in Korea and Getting Lost in Gangnam (Part I) (Writer’s Note: Adventures With Jenny is my shameless try at cataloging my first shuttle to Korea with #KoreaJoa2015! For the following 10 days, apply me as I indulge in Korea’s iconic food — reside octopus, anyone? — and landmarks, made entire with retellings of quick encounters with celebrity.)

I travel a decent amount. In fact, I like practically the total lot about traveling: all of the international in one suitcase, the refreshing breeze of a new city, the resident’s colorful accents and languages. yet no longer going to lie, if there’s something I fully abhor about traveling, it’s the aircraft ride. I wouldn’t say I’m a terrified flyer, but I’m indisputably a anxious one. One slight dip in a bout of turbulence has my back flat opposed to the seat, clinching the plane’s armrests with white knuckles and a faded face, whilst my seatmate supplies me a glance of annoyance for hogging her armrest. (Washington D.C. to South Korea is a whopping 14-hour flight. That’s like, 840 mins of fretting about being in a steel tube in this is flying throughout the air.)

Me when I be informed that I need to fly.

The ultimate hour of the flight is my favorite. This is when I breathe a sigh of relief and convince myself that I almost certainly won’t die in this vacation (or statistically, any trip, but still). It’s also top time to crank the window sunglasses up, just in time for the landing, without everybody around you recoiling from the pointy sunlight.

Touching down in Incheon, the sun off the horizon… Korea is de facto breathtaking.

A video posted by way of Soompi (@soompikpop) on Sep 29, 2015 at 3:42am PDT

You know you’re in Korea whilst you get greeted by a 2010 poster of Girls Generation at luggage claim, and then continue to peer Kim Soo Hyun’s face on every endorsement product ever, even the airport bus you’re taking. Being from a rustic where K-entertainment isn’t prominent in day to day life, I utterly stopped to stare at each and every K-pop star that made appearances at the walls, the columns, the televisions, and even, watch for it, the food. (Getting a coffee at the airport coffee shop and seeing Kim Soo Hyun on the coffee sleeve? Score!)

Kim Soo Hyun be like: “Buy my products, guuuurl.”

Somewhere all over the procedure of my 14-hour flight, the care for on my best wheeling suitcase broke. I didn’t understand till i used to be stepping off the bus in Gangnam that night, one duffle bag and one handbag in tow, achieving down to wheel my suitcase. It used to be like someone had spotted the tackle had broken, and then attempted to smartly re-arrange it in position as not to draw it any attention. Of course, the manage got here midway off in my hand once I gave it a yank.

I had no choice. I HAD NO CHOICE. I hauled my damaged suitcase around the street, where I had spotted a taxi waiting. Frantically, I tell the taxi ahjussi in broken Korean and exaggerated hand gestures to take me to my hotel, somewhere round the area. He took one glance at the cope with ahead of shooing me off the cab – it appears the hotel became tucked on the interior corners of an aspect boulevard that was tough for automobiles to pass. I come to a decision (okay, was forced) to walk. It was almost 9PM at night, the skies already darkened, with the streets lighted only by the dim glows of the streetlamps, the blinkers of the cars, and the unending video billboards. Thus started my adventure as I began to tug my suitcase down the streets of Gangnam, keeping off the stares of the ones passersby.

So while I’m half-hauling, half-dragging my suitcase via Gangnam, I will have to potentially mention that I absolutely no concept where I was going. In my defense, it was hard to balance having a look at a GPS and wanting NOT to be like Geum Jan Di in “Boys Over Flowers” when her baggage gets stolen in Macau.

And it took me a complete hour to get to my hotel TWO BLOCKS away. Welp, such a lot for arriving in Gangnam in Style.

Next up: i take a appearance at to to find a hair salon in Korea, navigate the maximum productive SUBWAY EVER, and move on a experience to BIFF in Busan! Have you been to Korea? Let me know in the comments below!

S.E.S is 'Gangnam taste' whilst FIN.K.L is 'Gangbuk taste'? - Shoo talks beyond competition between the 2 teams

Shoo, who used to be a section of SM"s beyond darling woman team S.E.S, featured as a guest on "Radio superstar" lately, chit-chatting about many various subjects.

S.E.S used to be one of the vital perfect woman teams of early millennia at the side of Fin.K.L, and it used to be no secret that the 2 teams saw every other as competitors. despite the reality that Shoo didn"t in my view broach the subject of the contention, the MCs, ever the satan"s advocates, discussed how S.E.S had branded themselves as a lady team of elegance. MC Kim Guk Jin asked the singer, "Didn"t you guys once say that "there would be no team like us someday because we"re too prime- elegance" or anything like that?"

Shoo elaborated, "We were a fancy team. We couldn"t even use the public toilet very easily," joking about the gang"s then- symbol. When the MCs accused her of throwing colour at Fin.K.L, Shoo explained, "i believe there used to be a thing about Gangbuk and Gangnam," regarding the reality that Gangbuk, which is north of the Han river, has a connotation of grittier and no more posh, whilst Gangnam, which is south of the Han River, is understood for being a prime elegance, upscale house.

She persevered, "S.E.S used to be Gangnam taste." When the MCs teased her, "So what is Fin.K.L then? Gangbuk taste?" Shoo handiest sputtered, "Wait, Hyori unnie... let"s just fake this didn"t take place," making the studio burst out into laughs as Shoo appeared afraid of what Fin.K.L member Hyori might say to her!

2NE1 And The (Racist) Definition of “Asian”

News via

20150726_seoulbeats_larsenthompson_tmillyproduction_2ne1_dara_yge2 2NE1 And The (Racist) Definition of Asian Written by Gaya On July 27, 2015 Hey, fellow K-pop fans: while we were all getting out undies in a twist about Taylor Swift maybe (not) copying 2NE1s Come Back Home MV and picking fights with Joseph Kahn, we could have been getting down to this sick beat dance video Before we saw the costume change halfway through.

This is a dance performance set to Beyonces Run The World and 2NE1 I Am The Best. Its performed by The Fraternal Twins: 11 year-old Taylor Hatala and 14 year-old Larsen Thompson. The dance was choreographed by Janelle Ginestra, the video shot, edited and directed by Tim Milgram, and cameo appearances made by a few other choreographers and dancers, including Kyle Hanagami.

It also features Hatala and Thompson wearing crop tops based on the Chinese cheongsam, makeup inspired by Japans geishas, and chopsticks in their hair buns. That the girls were mouthing Maega instead of Naega is kind of the least of our worries.

It seems that people still need to be told that East Asian cultures are not interchangeable; its a byproduct of a Western racial grouping system that places Korean, Vietnamese and Indonisian people in the same category (while excluding South Asians); a system that does not give many people a reason to learn about, or even recognise the existence of, distinct cultures.

Dancing to IATB with geisha makeup and chopsticks in your hair isnt cute or appropriate, its just stereotypical and plain racist. I mean, people behind this arent even pilfering from the right culture. This is what happens when you take your fashion cues from Katy Perry, everyone. It also makes other actions, like the V pose, appear just that bit more racist.

And there is no actual need to wear Korean clothing, or gisaeng hairstyles, either. Well, traditional Korean clothing; wearing clothes by Korean designers would have been pretty cool, actually, but its just not visually fetishising ~Asia~ enough to be a viable option, it seems.

Many people, including K-pop fans, think that the problem is that clothing worn isnt culturally Korean; and that definitely is an issue. But there is also this ignorant line of thinking that often happens, where people believe they must go above and beyond to pay respect to a culture, just because theyre using a 10-second clip of a pop song from people of that culture in a dance video.

But once theyre called out on that ignorance, they find that the culture they are meant to be honouring isnt really all that respectable. Tim Milgram responded to criticisms of the outfits thusly:

Just because the song came from Korea, doesn’t make it 100% Korean K-Pop music is a fusion of American pop music with Korean lyrics. If they were dancing to traditional Korean music in Chinese outfits, that would definitely be offensive… but they’re dancing to something that was essentially borrowed from American culture to begin with. Their outfits are merely what the choreographer and costume designer agreed visually works for that moment in the music. Drawing the conclusion that it’s offensive is just an overreaction, because people online love to be offended by something since that’s much more fun to write a comment about.

So, Milgram demonstrates his understanding of how mixing cultures is a no-no when done by other people, before going on to defend the outfits in his video by saying that the Koreans borrowed American stuff first!

K-pop and Korean pop culture isnt guilt-free when it comes to using other cultures as fashion, but to claim that the influence of mainstream American culture counts as much is as much of a stretch as claiming that Joseph Kahn copied a K-pop MV because he was born in South Korea. Someone please explain the nature of globalisationwhich is just American neo-imperialism by another nameto this guy, and how wearing jeans and making Western-inspired pop music is an example of assimilation into the globally dominant Western culture, and not comparable to what his video is doing.

Meanwhile, choreographer Janelle Ginestra had this to say:

In regards to all the negative feedback about the outfit choice. It saddens me to think that people would honestly feel like I would try to offend a culture or race. I truly knew what choice I made and knew I was taking a risk, but wouldnt think that people would be so viciously angry and aggressive about two young girls- dressing up in mock Geisha outfits. Its a skort from top shop- a Chinese inspired crop-top, and chopsticks I have had since High School! Have worn them in my bun (as they did), and bought those at Claires. I wanted to make an outfit change and do something different and impactful. I see visions in my head and go with it. You cant please everyone. Regardless of what we do as artists- some one is always going to have an opinion and something to say. I just dont want these girls getting attacked because of an artistic choice I made. Please understand this wasnt to offend anyone. Peace and love.

So apparently, the clothing choice was a risk, but not because it was racist. Ginestra believes that she wasnt doing anything racist because she wasnt consciously trying to. However, one doesnt need to put much effort into being racist, because it is so inbuilt in our society that its as easy as buying chinesey crop tops and hair chopsticks from a Western shop. It is a real shame that Janelle Ginestra, like many others, does not (yet) understand this.

Milgram even went as far as to make the offending outfits the screencap of the video. Either he is so incredibly ignorant of his own latent bigotry and is actually proud of this bastardisation of cultures, or he knows hes a bigot and is intentionally trolling us all for more views and publicity. Whatever the reasoning, the fact remains that all the hard work put into this video has been cheapened by the display of racism, and the attitudes that both led to and are defending it.

#killedit #ImtheBEST #2NE1 #Repost janelleginestra with repostapp. Have you seen this yet? If you…

— Minzy (@mingkki21) July 21, 2015

But none of that matters right now to Milgram, Ginestra and everyone else who sees no problem here. In the sea of articles raving about the two pint-sized dancers, very few mention 2NE1 at all, let alone the insensitive outfits, though this may change in the coming days. Furthermore, Minzy has reposted the video on her Instagram account, with positive comments.

Despite the fact that Asians living in Asia have a very different relationship with visually expressing their culture to Asians living in Western societies, Minzys post could be read as a silent endorsement of the messy outfitsregardless of Minzys actual thoughts on them, if she had any at all. Poor girl was probably just trying to do YGs job of promoting her and her group.

Ultimately, the problem with this video is two-pronged. The first is lumping together the vast array of Asian cultures into a monolith of Korean, Chinese and Japanese; and the second is the apparent inability to not exotify and anything Asian. And the sooner people learn to not do either of these things, especially in order to not be racist, the better for all of us.
