On June 27th, the crowd in Putra Indoor Stadium in Malaysia was a witness to a very happening concert headlined by three artists from CUBE, namely G.Na, 4Minute and also BEAST. Being the first ever concert sponsored by a life insurer in Malaysia, the AIA Kpop Concert took the theme 'Be Real. Love it. Live it' and presented a concert that is most likely won't be forgotten anytime soon by Malaysian Kpop fans.

The only solo artist in the concert that night, G.Na, opened the show with Supa Solo, taken from her first album. Decked in black outfits with glittery details, she also performed her hit songs 2HOT, BANANA, First Kiss, Top Girl and also Black and White, which mesmerized fans. When she performed I'll Live So You Live Better, Junhyung from BEAST, who was one of the other featured artists in the concert, joined her on the stage to perform together. Other than her own songs, G.Na also sang Take A Bow and Rude Boy, made popular by Rihanna.

The members, Hyuna, Jiyoon, Jihyun, Gayoon and Sohyun, greeted the Malaysian fans and mentioned how there are much more fans in Malaysia compared to the previous AIA Kpop Concert in Hong Kong in January 2013. With their newest song about to be released on 28th June, the girls teased their fans by giving them a taste of what they can get from It's Poppin' and sang a few lines of the song.

Fans got to see how versatile the girls from 4Minute were when they performed their hit songs such as I'm OK, HUH, Muzik and also they showed off their powerful vocal in ballad song, Pretend. Before ending their performance, the girls said that they were grateful of the fans' support and they hoped to come to Malaysia again! They went on to perform Heart to Heart and Hot Issue, as the crowd got more hyper and sang along with them.

They opened their performance by performing Beautiful Night and Bad Girl, which made the crowd even wilder. They greeted their fans and said that it has been a long time since their last visit, so their Malaysian fans must have missed them a lot. The next song they performed was Shock, Special and Fiction, which made the crowd dance and jumped along with the members as they got the crowd going. After all the excitement, BEAST cooled down the almost electric atmosphere with their beautiful ballad, Rainy Days and I Knew It, their beautiful voices reaching out to fans' hearts. As a special gift to their Malaysian fans, the group also performed their newest song 'Will You Be Alright?', written by member Junhyung, for the first time ever.

BEAST closed the show with their performance of Freeze, Beautiful and also an encore performance of V.I.U. During the encore, the boys were running around the stage and tried to be as close to the fans as possible by reaching out to them. Yoseob even went down the stage and shook hands with some very lucky fans. Leader, Doojoon, made the crowd went even wilder when he voluntareed himself to get 'showered' with water by other members.

That night was definitely the night where Malaysian Kpop fans were truly living it up, as per the theme of the concert. What a night to be remembered, indeed!

Beast’s “Midnight Sun” is an Objective Success

Beast’s “Midnight Sun” is an Objective Success

Beasts Midnight Sun is an Objective Success One of the most anticipated comebacks of 2012 was that of Beasts, the six-member reject group from Cube Entertainment that had skyrocketed to success with their last full album, Fact and Fiction, from 2011. Their hit single, Fiction, was one of the best K-pop songs released last year, acclaimed by critics and winning over the hearts of many to-be Beast fans. So it shouldnt come as a surprise to anyone that literally everyone (including us writers here) had sky-high expectations for Beasts new mini-album released just last week to eager fans.

Something that many people expected from Midnight Sun was the same catchy yet artistic tone the boys wowed their fans with last year, and Beast delivered. However, they took the chance to also experiment with a whole new sound instead of continuing down the angst-filled RB road they had approached in their previous songs. Midnight Sun was chock-full of songs with synthesizers, something that hadnt been seen much from Beast since their Lights Go On Again days, and energetic vocals from all of the boys.

Beasts Midnight Sun is an Objective Success The first track from Midnight Sun was Midnight, a pre-released single from the mini-album which wasnt remarkable, but at the same time pleasant on the ears. While the song combined acoustic elements such as guitar and piano, most of the track was very upbeat and filled with electronic elements. One thing that surprised me about it was that even though Beast revisited some of the previous qualities of their pre-Fact and Fiction music that had been criticized for overshadowing their vocals, Midnight actually made the boys voices shine for me. I thought that the track was well-executed and while not one that Beast could promote easily, it gave us a taste of what was to come on the rest of the mini-album.

Beasts promotional track from Midnight Sun, Beautiful Night, is the second track on the mini-album. Unlike Fiction, which was a mellow selection with overlapping parts of the chorus that made it shine in comparison to other K-pop songs, Beautiful Night embraces a very upbeat, electronic pop feel that fans typically associate with Beasts Bad Girl days. Luckily for us listeners, Cube took a lesson or two from the lack of response to Beasts debut track and changed their game, using a groovy bass line and vocal processing tastefully to bring out energy and youthfulness from the song. I especially enjoyed how funky and unformulaic Beautiful Night was for Beast, especially the bridge and Dongwoons lines. The boys also seem to have a lot of fun performing this less somber track live and while it may not be as widely loved and known as Fiction, I appreciated the nostalgia for Beasts earlier days Cube managed to bring back with this distinctly Beast track.

Beasts Midnight Sun is an Objective Success The other track that Beast has been promoting on music shows (and also the third song on Midnight Sun) is Its Not Me, a slick-sounding, clearly Beast song that has a great beat and sassy style. I was extremely happy to read that Junhyung helped write the lyrics for this song because if theres one thing that irks me, its definitely when I see the rapper in a K-pop group as dead weight. Luckily for Beast, Junhyung has been working on his composing, arranging, and writing skills (almost like G-Dragon) and its easy to see from his work that he has talent. When Beast retires, I see a bright future for Junhyung as a producer, as he spent a lot of time in putting the mini-album together with other composers, arrangers, and lyricists. Its Not Me is paired with flowing choreography that looks both relaxed and fun by the boys for performances, and its great to see something thats not as in your face from Beast. Not only do we get to see a cool rap sequence during the dance, we also get a great dance break from Yoseob toward the end. Even though all Beast members have their strengths and weaknesses, its nice to see them spread the dance parts out evenly instead of hand them all off to Kikwang, who is noted as the strongest dancer in the group.

Beasts Midnight Sun is an Objective Success The boys threw in a song with their signature ballad style stamped all over it for the fourth track on the mini-album. When I Miss You is a soft, slow selection with a sweet sound created by the meshing of Hyunseung and Yoseobs voices. The lyrics are melancholy and well-composed, so they match well with the tone of the song. My favorite thing about When I Miss You was Junhyungs rap at the end, which was more sung than spoken and thus had a smoother style than his other raps. Overall, When I Miss You was a beautiful ballad that could have gone on any soundtrack for a K-drama and reminded listeners of some of Beasts best works, such as On Rainy Days.

The style that Beast takes on in the fifth song on Midnight Sun, The Day You Rest, is a groovy one that has an interesting beat that is neither fast nor slow. While its great to see them experimenting with such different styles, The Day You Rest didnt really win me over. The melody in the back was too distracting and the vocals felt a bit weak compared to the rest of the tracks so I never felt like I was really listening to the song. The transitions felt very blurred and I couldnt distinguish between verses and the chorus, so while it wasnt an entirely sloppy track, Cube could have done a better job to clean up this song.

Beasts Midnight Sun is an Objective Success Beast wraps up Midnight Sun with Dream Girl, their one RB selection for the mini-album. Dream Girl was my favorite between the six songs, hands down, but Im also partial to Beasts RB sound. Regardless, they did a great job meshing pop and RB as they always do and gave Dream Girl a sweetness that I typically dont get from K-pop songs. Hyunseungs vocals especially shone in Dream Girl and everything about this ballad just came together, bringing a touch of sophistication and maturity to Midnight Sun.

Overall, Beasts Midnight Sun was a great step in terms of artistry for them. Theyve demonstrated themselves to be capable vocalists even with a completely different style of music from Fact and Fiction, and they deserve respect for that. While the mini-album wasnt as epic or mindblowing as their previous album, it still did a great job in showing their growth as a group through tracks that were put together cleanly and executed flawlessly. Junhyung especially impressed me with his raps and producing prowess in Midnight Sunhis rapping displayed his skills as one of the most talented idol rappers and won me over with his swag onstage (even if Im not really digging the purple hair). Beast knew that it wasnt going to be possible to top Fact and Fiction so they took a different route instead this time around, and so they didnt try to do that. Instead, they opted for growth sideways instead of up, which is still growth at the end of the day.

Rating: 4.6/5

BEAST Shares Their Worries Regarding "Midnight Sun" in Recent Interview

BEAST Shares Their Worries Regarding "Midnight Sun" in Recent Interview

BEAST Shares Their Worries Regarding Midnight Sun in Recent InterviewChange. That is the theme of BEAST’s latest release. The members have dyed their hair and tried out a variety of styles. Instead of their usual hip-hop fashion they donned colorful costumes. Their latest music video is playful, getting away from the precise choreography and portraying the members as free-spirits partying on the streets of New York. After a year and two month hiatus the group releases their fifth mini-album, “Midnight Sun” to officially announce the return of BEAST.

BEAST is working with a new team of composers. Their title track “Beautiful Night” was composed by Goodnite, Sleep Well. It is an example of an Electronic Synth-Pop track which shows off each of the members distinctive vocals, which is uncommon for that genre of music. It is a fresh and original song which combines electronic sounds and the emotions of BEAST.

Through the official fan café member Yang Yoseob shared, “I am afraid of change. This is the first time where we will be trying electronic music, there were lots of worries and frustration. The truth is the element of change is what actually worries us.”

He continued, “We hope to incorporate our experience from the world tour into this album. We feel that our interactions with the audience and fans is lacking. Hopefully with this album we are able to compensate a little. We will show you our free yet handsome, youthful appearance.”

It was unanimous with the six members that changes had to take place. They chose what would ultimately be added to the album, but it was still unknown whether the fans would accept it or not.

“Our fans waited for a long period of time for us. If we were to show our normal selves, it wouldn’t be anything big, so we were worried about doing so, that we would disappoint them. After we thought it over we decided to put out the best album and in turn we would gain confidence from it.”

Not Me” is said to feature a solo dance performed by vocalist Yang Yoseob taking him out of his comfort zone. Yoseob commented, “I have been working hard to prepare for it. When rehearsal ends I continue to practice until the sun comes up. My theory is that our choreographer knows I am unsure about my dancing ability, so he gave me this part to help me become more confident.”

They have no regrets about their decision. The album was originally scheduled to be released in May but the group had chosen to postpone it until July. Rapper Yong Jun Hyung explained, Of course we were nervous, but we wanted to bring the fans a good song for our comeback. The reason for our delay was actually because of this.  The choice reflected the group’s individual opinions as this album includes the most participation from each of the members. Yong Jun Hyung took an active role in the album’s creation as he participated in penning lyrics for “Midnight” and “If I Miss You,” as well as the composing and writing of “The Day You Rest” and “Dream Girl.” The members poured their feedback into the album’s concept, style, songs, and music video.  Yong Jun Hyung commented on the experience, “All of us have very different opinions from those around us, yet we are still insecure about all these changes we’ve made. Ultimately we wanted to show ourselves in a new, confident light on stage, so we decided to use (Beautiful Night) as our title track.”

Leader Yoon Doojoon contributed, “It is not that we want to challenge or break out from idols’ music style, we want to resist it. We had to make little changes to an extent which would be acceptable with the public.”

Dongwoon followed up by saying, “To change our music style after three years is a very difficult thing to do. Up until now we had confusing thoughts of, ‘Are we doing it right?’ But the six of us were confident initially about our title track, so if it is any good or not didn’t matter to us because we put everything we had into it. In the end we have no regrets.”

Jang Hyun Seung shared his hopes, “This album looks at the various goals we would like to accomplish, first we recognized that we want to make music. Second, we hope to win an award soon. We would like to place first four times in a row. Although we aren’t overly concerned about winning awards, I still hope that we will have meaningful promotions.”

Lee Kikwang added, “We will be promoting as long as we are loved, right? Haha! Psy senior has been receiving much love from the public. I hope that you will show us some of that love as well.”

The new look of Beast will be presented through their live performances of “Beautiful Night” and “Not Me.” The group’s first comeback appearance on KBS 2TV’s “Music Bank” was scheduled to air on July 27. But because of the broadcast of the Olympics Beast’s comeback stage on “Music Bank” will air after the Olympics on August 3.

The “Midnight Sun” Sets on Beast

The “Midnight Sun” Sets on Beast

After teasing us for over a week with songs, pictures, and music video teasers, Beast has made their comeback a year after releasing their last album, Fact and Fiction. As you may remember, Beasts last album won much love and praise from us here at SeoulBeats, even earning the Album of the Year award. The same cant necessarily be said for Beasts newest album, which admittedly has a lot to compete with so far this year in terms of musical quality. Likewise, their comeback music video for Midnight Sun leaves a lot to be desired.

Beasts music video for Midnight Sun doesnt have complexity or an underlying meaning or emotional valueits simply a colorful, upbeat, party MV that involves a lot of strutting and hopping around on Beasts part. The boys dont even dance, instead opting to do a lot of swag moves, strut, and awkwardly hop around. The cinematography does its best to capture a lively atmosphere and to be perfectly honest, the city looks lovely. Perhaps it was a good idea to choose New York City as the film site, the urban setting and graffitid walls oddly making Beasts fashion look less deplorable. Beasts styling in this MV is definitely some of their worst, from Kikwangs fried blond mohawk to Dongwoons pimp-suits to Hyunseungs pink blazer and floral shorts. Pink with red hair. What The Midnight Sun Sets on Beast were his stylists thinking. But luckily for Beast, the fun atmosphere and bright setting worked to their advantage, and they didnt look too bad. If anything, their colorful outfits added to the music videos fun, summery vibe.

The MVs main problem is its lack of consistency. The whole thing felt a little strung together, the different scenes not doing anything to create a storyline or really embody anything at all. One moment, the boys are walking down a sunny street, checking themselves out in windows and dancing a little as they go. The next, theyre standing atop dumpsters in graffitid alleyways. Then, theyre hopping about, in front of a car and a crowd. Later on, theyre hopping in front of a crowd again, but this time at night, with fireworks going off in the background. Before the MV ends, there are shots of the boys sitting in a car, doing nothing besides looking good, and then walking down a street together in slow-motion. The only real purpose the MV had was to make Beast appear as cool as possible.

The Midnight Sun Sets on Beast Another problem the music video had was Beast. Beast, for all their talent, werent emoting very well in this MV. Even their jumping and rocking out felt halfhearted, even awkward. The crowd did a better job at conveying a party scene than they did. Beast just looked out-of-place in every party scene, one boy taking the lead and the others not sure what to do behind him without choreography. Hyunseung was the most amusing, but only because hed do weird little dance moves during the group scenes. Seriously, watch him.

One last thing to note was the large amount of white women. It was like Beast was singing to a crowd purely made of white women, with some men of different ethnicities riding backs or dancing. This isnt all that surprising, considering Beasts racial scandal a few weeks back, putting out an advertisement for Caucasian women only to play the part of party-goers. There are some non-Caucasian women in the crowd, however.

For having no plot, no complexity, no consistency, and nothing that couldve make this video more entertaining, Beasts Midnight Sun MV gets a 1.5/5.
