Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh graced the stage in North Korea as popular Disney cartoons like “Snow White” and “Beauty and the Beast” played on a massive screen behind them.

It is the first show in Pyeongyang to feature a cast of Disney characters and represented the debut of the Moranbong band launched by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Interview : Korean Central News Agency “First Secretary of the Workers’ Party and Chairman of the National Defense Commission and Supreme Commander, our Dear Leader, Kim Jong-un watched a concert by the new Moranbong band Friday”.This rare display of Disney characters once banned in the country for being too Western came about after Kim Jong-un’s plan to “bring about a dramatic turn in the field of literature and arts”, was announced and may represent a larger change in the leader’s policies.

Watching the show on Friday, Kim Jong-un and other North Korean officials applauded enthusiastically. After the concert, the young North Korean leader then said that he will actively push for open-door policies in a gesture showing his willingness to break from the reform-driven policies of his late father, Kim Jong-il.

Experts say that Kim Jong-un’s speech shows the young leader has a flexible attitude toward global trends which may be an attempt to demonstrate to the international community the country’s willingness to change. Kim Jong-un, educated in Switzerland during his teens, has reportedly initiated policies for children that contain elements of fun.

Under his leadership, the Mangyongdae Amusement Park has imported new rides from France and the park now sells hamburgers and french fries.Kim Yeon-ji, Arirang News.
