Explore the Arctic at Yeosu
Beyond the one-month mark, the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea has begun to get noticed by major foreign media including the New York Times (NYT) and Le Monde. The Yeosu-focused article published on June 9 in the travel section of the NYT under the title of ‘In South Korea, All Roads Lead to Yeosu’ reported that the “unremarkable, out-of-the-way city Yeosu has been transformed to seem more like fast-paced Seoul” thanks to new futuristic buildings and infrastructure upgrades. The May 17 edition of France’s Le Monde also published an article titled “Shines on South Jeolla Province, the jewel of Korea (Joyau de la Corée du Sud, le Jeolla brille à nouveau)”. The news reported that Yeosu, a small city a generation ago, became a development zone due to the global marine festival and draws millions of visitors presently.
presently a month into its run, Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea continues to receive attention from domestic and international media outlets.
Yeosu news has been covered by several other foreign media outlets too. In addition to the Expo grounds being voted “the exhibition of this year” by U.S. Exhibitor Online, at least one piece covering the festivity has been written by each of China’s CCTV, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, Germany’s Die Welt, Switzerland’s Romandie, and Italy’s PiemontePress. Today, the festivities in Yeosu are in full swing. The participating countries have been assigned a ‘national day’ to present unique aspects of their culture, art, and traditions. The cultural diversity experienced in the Expo adds to the visitors’ excitement. The Russian Pavilion, whose national day falls on June 20, was recommended for a visit this week. Taking advantage of its geographical features surrounded by the waters of the Arctic, the Pacific, and the Atlantic Oceans, the country is determined to show the mysterious 1,000-year history of the Arctic. The Russian Pavilion provides visitors a glimpse of the harsh cold of the Arctic and also introduces the evolution of the Russian icebreaker ship, a source of national pride.

Exploration of the Arctic is the main concept of the Russian Pavilion, which has an ice tunnel exuding a realistic Arctic atmosphere. The highlight of the pavilion is the multimedia show which leads visitors deep into the ocean, smashing through the ice. Visitors can get a taste of an Arctic expedition and witness the 20th century’s greatest geographical discovery in the Arctic through travelling from Murmansk through Vladivostok. Another popular program is an icebreaker simulation that visitors can ride through the ocean. The history of Arctic exploration is chronologically displayed including stories of explorers discovering the Northern Sea Route, the shortest route between Europe and Asia, and of Russian vessels from their original wooden ship to the world’s first nuclear-powered ship. As well, a display of models of the Vostok Station, a tidal power plant, and a new-generation atomic icebreaker have earned the Russian Pavilion a positive review as being full of informative and educational content. More information about the Russian Pavilion can be found at the official website (www.expo2012korea.ru ).

The upcoming national day of Russia is also expected to be filled with a brilliant cultural program. The Russian Pavilion officially announced that enchanting traditional dances by the Berezka Dance Ensemble is set to kick off the cultural program. The afternoon will showcase a gala by a collection of Russian dancers from Bolshoi Theater, Kremlin Ballet Theater, and many more. Turkey, whose national day comes on the following day on June 21, has also been arousing increased expectations since the country introduced a reenactment of the grand marching ceremony of Janissary, with the old Ottoman Sultan’s troops.

Visitors to the Turkish Pavilion were enraptured by the 3D images of fish which swim under their feet. The marine creatures, accidently stepped on by visitors, turn and run away. The official webpage of the Turkish Pavilion will provide more details: http://www.expoyeosu2012turkey.com A global cooking competition attended by professional chefs of 13 Expo-participating countries every Saturday provides a great public spectacle. The cooks from Spain, China, Thailand, Argentina, and many more give their best for their national pride. The theme of the competition differs each week, such as “the world of fish”, “everything about noodles”, and “cuisine that goes well with wine”, to name a few. “Food helps to tear down the cultural and linguistic barriers and encourages sharing, lifestyle, and uniqueness of each nation” said the manager of the Spain Pavilion where the competition takes place.
