The Arirang Festival kicks off on Friday at the National Museum of Korea with a program of concerts and seminars designed to celebrate the country’s beloved national folksong.

The festival begins with a series of seminars featuring prominent scholars who will discuss the song’s significance. The festival was created by the Culture Ministry to raise awareness about the song in response to attempts by China last year to register it as a cultural property.

The government plans to submit its own application to register the song on Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list later this month.

The program will also feature two concerts on Saturday and Sunday evening with K-pop and folk musicians that showcase traditional and modern interpretations of the song.
